  • FACT CHECK: Does the Governor of Kentucky Get To Pick A Replacement If Mitch McConnell Steps Down? A post on X claims that should Senator Mitch McConnell step down, the sitting governor of Kentucky will be able to pick his replacement. I’m not a Mitch McConnell Republican by any means. Those who know me and have followed me for the last decade know that. But those calling for his resignation – while a Democrat occupies the KY Governor’s Mansion and would appoint his successor – are showing an elementary grasp… — CJ Pearson (@thecjpearson) December 13, 2024 Verdict: False A 2024 Kentucky law states that a special election would take place to fill the vacancy for the remainder of the term. Fact Check: Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell has faced some highly publicized health issues recently, and with those he has been facing mounting pressure to resign. The 82-year-old Senate Minority Leader has been working from home after a fall at his Capitol office in which he sprained his wrist and cut his face. This was not the first health issue the Senator has faced. McConnell has twice “froze” up while taking questions from reporters, leaving spectators bewildered and voters raising questions about the age of the country’s current leadership class. (RELATED: Video Of Mitch McConnell With Forehead Bandage Is Edited) A post on X claims that it is a mistake for Republicans to call for McConnell’s resignation due to health issues, as the Democrat Governor of Kentucky Andy Beshear would be able to choose his replacement. This is false, however. A state law, given final approval by Kentucky Republicans in March, a special election would have to be held to determine who would take over McConnell’s seat for the rest of his term. This law would apply to any Senate vacancy, and even though Governor Andy Beshear has denounced the bill as being driven by partisanship, the state GOP had supermajority that overrode his veto. Senator McConnell has not announced plans to resign as of press time.
