  • FACT CHECK: Did Maxine Waters Say, ‘The Next Supreme Court Justice Should Be An Illegal Immigrant’? An image shared on Facebook claims Democratic California Rep. Maxine Waters said, “The next Supreme Court justice should be an illegal immigrant.” Verdict: False This is no record of Waters making the statement. Fact Check: Waters, who represents California’s 43rd congressional district, condemned in June 2018 the Trump administration’s policy under which children in undocumented immigrant families were separated from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border, according to a press release on her congressional website. She also previously issued a statement on Twitter criticizing former President Donald Trump for using “racist slurs about immigrants.” A post on Facebook shares an image of Waters and claims she made the statement, “The Next Supreme Court Justice Should Be An Illegal Immigrant.” (RELATED: ‘#GUNCONTROLNOW’ – Did Maxine Waters Send This Tweet About Gun Ownership?) The statement, however, has been misattributed to Waters. Check Your Fact searched the congressional record, as well as Waters’ verified social media posts, but found no instances of the remark. Nor did the comment appear on Waters’ website. An internet search by Check Your Fact likewise didn’t turn up any media reports of Waters making the statement in question. The fake quote appears to originate from a 2018 tweet shared by the now-defunct Twitter account @CNNPoltics, which described itself as “Political fake news, campaign stories and Washington coverage from this CNN parody account,” according to an archived screen grab of its Twitter page. The tweet tagged @MaxinePWaters, a parody account that has been suspended. This isn’t the first time Waters has been the subject of a fake quote. Check Your Fact previously corrected a false rumor that a tweet sent by the account @MaxinePWaters about gun control was actually sent by Waters herself.
