Quick Take
A social media post claims that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi suggested singing bhajans can remove malnutrition. We fact-checked and found the claim to be False. On the occasion of Amrit Mahotsav, while telling the collective might of the country in the 92nd episode of ‘Mann ki Baat’, the prime minister referred to the ‘Mera Bachha Campaign’ in which bhajans were organised. Along with it, a Matka program was held in which women brought a handful of grains which was used to feed children in Anganwadi centres once a week, which showed a dip in cases of malnutrition.
The Claim
A Twitter post claims prime minister narendra modi suggested singing bhajans can cure malnutrition in the 92nd episode of Mann ki Baat.
Fact Check
Did the prime minister say singing bhajans remove malnutrition?
No. The prime minister never made such a statement. The 92nd episode of mann ki baat discussed the collective might of the country during Amrit Mahotsav and Independence Day 2021. While discussing the ‘Mera Bachha Campaign’, the prime minister said ‘Can you imagine, whether song and music and bhajans can also be used to remove malnutrition?’. It seems social media users have taken this statement literally and spread disinformation on the internet.
Mera Bachha Abhiyan was organised in the Datia district of Madhya Pradesh. During this campaign, bhajan-kirtans were organised, and nutrition gurus were invited. Also, a Matka program was held in which women brought a handful of grains which were cooked to feed children in Anganwadi centres once a week. During the Mann Ki Baat, the Prime Minister referred to this activity and said that this activity has potential to reduce the malnutrition among kids.
It has been noted that bhajans are used as a tool to create awareness among people and not as a substitute for nutritious food.
Public discourse around health often features bold claims, much like the recent tweet from the U.K. Cultural Secretary about dogs that captured attention. These discussions highlight the importance of verifying information before accepting it as truth.
