We fact-checked and found this claim to be Mostly False. The Claim A post on social media claims that you can lose 7 pounds in a week by drinking a juice made with Cucumber, lemon, ginger, and pineapple twice a day. The screenshot of the post is attached below. Fact Check How do you lose weight? Losing weight is a multidisciplinary approach that can be achieved by eating a balanced diet with fibre and protein and avoiding alcohol, processed foods, sugar, and high-fat food items and doing regular physical activities such as exercise, strength training, swimming etc. Secondly, there might be certain underlying medical conditions due to which one is gaining weight, such as diabetes, thyroid disease, and PCOS, to name a few. In such cases, treating the underlying condition is necessary to lose weight. Dr. P. Rammanohar, Research Director, Amrita Centre for Advanced Research in Ayurveda (ĀCĀRA), says, “Ayurveda states that obesity is a condition difficult to cure. In fact, the text states bluntly that it is almost an incurable disease – na hi sthulasya bheshajam. There is no magical remedy for obesity. No single medicine, internal or external, can treat the problem. Stress management, lifestyle, and diet constitute the main approach to treatment. Medicines, either external or internal, are only supportive. The more patients comply with the comprehensive protocol, the better the results. Obesity also requires an individualized treatment protocol.” Furthermore, after consulting the expert, dietician Priyanka opines, “Losing fat is a multidimensional approach. If you want to lose fat, you need to find out the cause of weight gain: inflammation, leaky gut, hormone imbalance, toxins, low metabolism, intake of medicines like steroids, etc. Once you identify the cause, you need to modify your diet and lifestyle accordingly to lose fat.” Can you lose 7 pounds in 1 week by drinking a juice made with Cucumber, lemon, ginger, and pineapple? No. No scientific evidence proves that you can lose 7 pounds in 1 week by drinking a juice made with cucumber, lemon, ginger, and pineapple. Losing this much weight drastically is not safe and may occur due to dehydration. The weight loss can only happen if a person is making lifestyle alterations, physically working out and only consuming this drink. Overconsumption of it would do more harm than good. The ingredients, cucumber and pineapple, are diuretics, and mint, ginger, and lemon can slightly dampen appetite, which can lead to electrolyte changes and muscle loss, which is dangerous for the body. Therefore, it is not advised to go for such a crash diet that can harm the body in the long run. Another false social media post claims that one can lose 5 kgs in one day by consuming rock-salted water. Dt. Kamna Tank, Certified Dietician at Nutrificious Diet Clinic, further confirms this by stating, “No scientific evidence can claim that you can lose 7Lbs in one week; even if this happens, it will not be a healthy weight loss. We always have to go with the flow with a proper and healthy diet by consulting our dietician so that he/she can provide us with proper diet plans to lose weight in a healthy manner instead of going with any kind of crash diet. Many factors are responsible for our weight gains, like diet, sleep quality, physical activity, and stress. So diet plays an important role in this journey. Therefore, instead of going with any liquid or crash diet, go with a healthy diet.”
