Tulsi Gabbard sent Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi $600.01 through Venmo to force the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to audit her. Verdict: False There is no evidence to suggest such a transaction occurred. The claim stems from a satirical account. Fact Check: The recently-passed Inflation Reduction Act allocates $80 billion in funding for the IRS, which says the money will be used for enforcement and audits, according to CNBC. The agency is also planning to hire more agents as a result of the funding, the outlet reported. An image shared on Facebook claims the IRS may be forced to audit Pelosi after Gabbard sent her a Venmo payment of $600.01. The image shows a screen grab of a tweet that reads, “BREAKING Tulsi Gabbard Venmos Nanci (sic) Pelosi $600.01 forcing the IRS to audit Pelosi’s finances.” As of this tax year, the IRS requires the “reporting of payment transactions for goods and services sold that meets or exceeds $600 in a calendar year,” according to Venmo’s website. There are no credible news reports to suggest that Gabbard sent Pelosi any money via Venmo. No such claim has been mentioned on any of Gabbard’s social media accounts. There is likewise no mention of such a scheme on Pelosi’s social media accounts or website. The Twitter account that sent the initial tweet, @ThatmattersNews, identifies as satirical. “REPORT A new study shows that a shocking number of American adults have trouble spelling the word ‘satire,’ let alone recognizing it,” reads an Aug. 17 tweet from the account. This is not the first time satirical content from @ThatmattersNews has gone viral. Check Your Fact recently debunked a claim stemming from the same account that alleged Congress voted to exempt themselves from any upcoming IRS audits. Check Your Fact has reached out to Gabbard’s office for comment and will update this piece accordingly if one is received.
