It's not related to the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Around a billion India will vote for the 18th Lok Sabha from April 19 to June 1 in seven phases to elect their representatives in the lower house of the Parliament. In its run-up, a video of several people holding placards proclaiming “No Vote To BJP” at different locations began making rounds online. Those sharing the video linked it to the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. The archive of such a post can be seen here. India Today Fact Check found that the viral video is more than three years old, from the 2021 West Bengal elections. Our Probe A quick reverse search of screengrabs from the viral video led us to the same video uploaded to the YouTube channel “No Vote To BJP” on February 13, 2021. As per the video’s description, a large number of people unanimously expressed their views to not vote for the Bharatiya Janata Party at several iconic places in Kolkata. The same video was uploaded to the Instagram account “No Vote To BJP” on February 16, 2021, with captions related to the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections. This made it clear that the video was more than three years old and had nothing to do with the upcoming general elections. There are multiple anti-BJP and “No Vote To BJP” campaign videos on the YouTube channel. However, their channel has been inactive since April 2021. We searched about this campaign online and found that it was set up by a group of political and civil rights activists in January 2021. It was launched ahead of Bengal state polls and its main motive was discouraging people from voting in favour of the BJP. As per The Hindu’s report after the Bengal elections, the campaign “No Vote To BJP” helped Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress to register a massive victory over the BJP. the TMC won over 200 seats as compared to just 77 by the BJP. It’s noteworthy that during the Karnataka Assembly elections in 2023, videos of this campaign went viral. At the time as well, India Today Fact Check debunked these claims.
