A video showing former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Nupur Sharma holding a saffron flag and participating in a rally is being widely shared on social media.
The claim: The video is being shared to claim that it shows Sharma campaigning for the BJP for the upcoming 2025 Delhi Assembly elections.
(Archives of more claims on social media can be seen here and here.)
Is it true?: No, the video dates back to January 2024 and shows Sharma participating in a rally prior to the consecration of the idol at Ayodhya's Ram temple.
How did we find out the truth?: We ran a reverse image search on the video using Google Lens, which led us to an Aaj Tak report, shared as a video on their YouTube channel on 17 January 2024.
The video mentioned that it showed a rally taken out to raise awareness about the consecration of the idol at Ayodhya's Ram Mandir, which happened on 22 January.
Even back then, people were speculating whether her participation in the rally meant that she would enter active politics for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Their report mentioned that she had been seen in public for the first time since the prophet remarks row in 2022.
News organisation The Lallantop had also shared a better version of the same visuals in January 2024, with the same context about Sharma's participation in the rally.
At the time of writing this report, the BJP had released one list of its candidates for the 2025 Delhi elections, and it did not include Sharma's name.
Conclusion: An old video of former BJP leader Nupur Sharma is being shared to falsely claim that it shows a video of her campaigning for the BJP.
