  • FACT CHECK: Did Joe Biden Tweet Urging Uganda To Revoke Its LGBTQ+ Ban Or Face Economic Sanctions? A photo shared on Facebook allegedly shows a tweet from President Joe Biden threatening to place economic sanctions on Uganda unless the country revokes its ban on people identifying as LGBTQ+. Verdict: False The screenshot is digitally fabricated. No such tweet can be found on Biden’s verified Twitter account. Fact Check: Ugandan lawmakers approved new anti-gay legislation Mar. 21, with some laws imposing penalties of 20 years in prison for those who identify as LGBTQ+, according to CNN. Although more than 30 countries ban same-sex relations, Uganda might be the first to outlaw merely identifying as a part of the LGBTQ+ community, NBC News reported. The Facebook photo allegedly shows a tweet from Biden threatening to impose economic sanctions on Uganda if the country does not revoke its anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. The post shares a screenshot of an alleged Twitter post made by Biden on Mar. 24. “Uganda’s Ban on LGBTQ community (sic) will not be taken lightly,” the alleged tweet reads. “I want to urge the the (sic) President of Uganda to uplift the ban or face economic sanctions.” Underneath, the screenshot appears to show Ugandan President Yoweri K Museveni responding that Putin is on his country’s side and then Russian President Vladimir Putin responding with “I got you buddy.” The photo is digitally fabricated. There are no matching tweets on Biden’s verified Twitter account. Additionally, no archived versions of Biden’s account features the tweet. The alleged screenshot also shows a space in Biden’s Twitter handle, whereas the actual handle does not have one and is written @JoeBiden. The alleged interaction does not appear on Museveni’s account either. Furthermore, Putin does not have a personal twitter account. There is an official account for Russia’s president, but it has not been updated since last year. (RELATED: Did U.S. Threaten Uganda For Their Stance On Homosexuality?)
