  • Fact Check: This is not a Myntra ad, comic made by others leads to calls for boycott of fashion giant A comic made by others led to the boycott of the fashion Gaint, Myntra that did not make the advertisement. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This is not a Myntra ad. This comic was created by a social media publication called Scroll Droll in 2016. Even back then, Myntra clarified this on social media. Fashion e-commerce giant Myntra began its “Big Fashion Festival Sale” on September 23 this year. Just before the start of this event, however, a comic panel, allegedly an advertisement for Myntra, was widely shared online. It depicts the “vastraharan” scene from the “Mahabharata” — the attempt made by Dushasana to disrobe Draupadi — and Lord Krishna is shown using a smartphone and shopping for “extra long sarees” on Myntra. Those sharing the comic panel called for boycotts against Myntra for offending the religious sentiments of Hindus. AFWA, however, found that this comic was not created by Myntra. It was made by a social media publication called Scroll Droll in 2016. AFWA Probe The viral comic featured a watermark “Scroll Droll” in the top-left corner. When we searched online, we found a 2016 India Today report. According to it, Scroll Droll, a social media publication, created this comic in February 2016. It was a part of their series reimagining mythological characters and Hindu deities using smartphone apps. Other comics in the series included Vishwamitra using Tinder to find Menaka, Narada using travel portal Yatra, Lord Ganesh using Zomato to order food, and Lord Hanuman using Instagram. We also found a series of tweets from Myntra’s official account where, back in 2016, the company had distanced itself from the viral comic and had also talked about pursuing legal action against the publication. We did not create this artwork nor do we endorse this. https://t.co/EWyWUEsky5 — Myntra (@myntra) August 26, 2016 Following considerable outrage online, Scroll Droll too at the time apologised for “hurting people’s sentiments.” We apologize and deeply regret if any of our artwork has hurt the sentiments of anyone. — ScrollDroll (@ScrollDroll) August 25, 2016 Over the years this comic has been shared multiple times with calls to boycott Myntra. Consequently, this has also been fact-checked several times as well.
