  • FACT CHECK: Does This Video Show A Protest Against The ‘Effects Of WEF Globalism’ In Spain? A video shared on Facebook purports to show a recent protest against the effects of the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) “globalism” in Spain. Verdict: False The video shows a protest in Madrid Feb. 12 against the privatization of the public health system. Fact Check: More than 100 groups protested against Spain’s Socialist government in Madrid back in January, according to Reuters. Protestors decried the country’s alleged “totalitarian policies” and the removal of sedition penalties from the country’s penal code, among other issues, La Prensa Latina reported. The Facebook post claims video from Spain shows a different protest against WEF policies in the country. “Spain protests the effects of WEF globalism,” text overlay on the video, shared to Facebook, purports. A time and date stamp included on the video of the protest indicate it was filmed on Feb. 12 of this year in Madrid. The claim is false. The video shows a protest in Madrid against the privatization of the public health system, according to the Twitter user who uploaded the video. “Huge demonstration in Madrid. More than 250,000 people demonstrate to defend the public health system and protest against its privatization,” the caption reads. In addition to claiming the public health system is being privatized, healthcare workers said they’d experienced wage cuts and lack of support, according to the outlet. “Indeed those images correspond to a protest related to Health in Madrid,” a spokesperson for the Spanish Ministry of Health/Ministerio de Sanidad told Check Your Fact in an email. There are no credible news reports suggesting an anti-WEF globalism protest recently took place in Spain. Likewise, the WEF has neither mentioned the purported protest on its website nor its verified social media accounts. Misinformation regarding laws and protests in multiple countries have circulated on social media. Check Your Fact recently debunked an image suggesting a new law required joggers to wear helmets.
