  • FACT CHECK: Did The Arizona Senate Lay Out RICO Indictments Against Katie Hobbs? A post shared on X, the social media platform previously called Twitter, claims the Arizona Senate has purportedly laid out Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act indictments against the state’s Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs. BREAKING: Arizona Senate has laid out RICO indictments against Katie Hobbs and others in violation of RICO ACT-13-2301, including bribery, racketeering, money laundering, drug trafficking, human trafficking, aiding and abetting the Sinaloa Cartel, and election fraud.… — Ron Messick (@ron_messick) September 24, 2023 Verdict: False A spokesperson for the Arizona State Senate Republicans refuted the claim, according to The Associated Press. Fact Check: Hobbs stepped down as governor of Arizona for one day, prompting Arizona Treasurer Kimberly Yee to briefly step in as acting governor, Fox News reported on Sept. 28. Yee shared a statement announcing the temporary change but declined to explain what prompted it, according to the outlet. “BREAKING: Arizona Senate has laid out RICO indictments against Katie Hobbs and others in violation of RICO ACT-13-2301, including bribery, racketeering, money laundering, drug trafficking, human trafficking, aiding and abetting the Sinaloa Cartel, and election fraud,” the X post purports. The post has received over 1,000 likes as of writing. The claim is false. Check Your Fact found no credible news reports suggesting Hobbs was facing RICO indictments. If the claim was actually true, multiple media outlets would’ve covered it, yet none have. Likewise, the claim does not appear on the Arizona State Legislature’s website. In addition, Hobbs has not publicly commented on the claim via her website or verified social media accounts. (RELATED: Did Arizona Ban Electronic Voting Machines?) Kim Quintero, a spokesperson for the Arizona State Senate Republicans, refuted the claim, according to The Associated Press. “I’m not sure where this bogus information is coming from,” Quintero said in an email to the outlet. She also indicated that the legislature “is not authorized to issue indictments,” the outlet reported. Check Your Fact has contacted Quintero and Hobbs’s office for comment and will update this piece accordingly if one is received.
