Quick Take
A social media post claims that castor oil and fenugreek can stop hair fall and darken hair. We did the fact check and found this claim to be mostly false.
The Claim
An Instagram post suggests that applying a mixture of fenugreek powder and castor oil to the scalp can reduce hair fall, strengthen hair, and make it darker.
Fact Check
Can castor oil and fenugreek powder prevent hair fall?
No, there is no solid proof that this mixture can stop hair fall. Castor oil has a compound called ricinoleic acid that may help the scalp but doesn’t stop hair fall. Some people say it helps hair grow, but there’s no strong evidence for this. A 2015 study (in silico) suggested it might help with hair loss, but this isn’t proven in humans.
Fenugreek seeds have proteins and nutrients that can nourish the scalp, but there’s not enough proof that they stop hair fall. Similarly, some social media posts also claim that fenugreek seeds can accelerate weight loss.
Hair fall can happen due to genetics, hormonal changes, or health issues. Using this mixture without addressing the real cause won’t make much difference. If hair loss continues, it’s best to see a doctor.
We spoke with Dr Ekansh Shekhar, Dermatologist, Cosmetologist, Trichologist, and Aesthetic Medicine Consultant in Lucknow, to learn whether castor oil and fenugreek powder can prevent hair fall. He says, “No, there is no strong evidence that castor oil and fenugreek powder can prevent hair fall. Castor oil can moisturise the scalp, and fenugreek powder has nutrients that may improve hair health. But they don’t stop hair fall. Hair loss is usually due to genetics, hormones, or health issues. It’s best to see a dermatologist to find the real cause.”
Can this mixture of castor oil and fenugreek seeds make hair darker?
No, there is no scientific evidence to prove that a mixture of castor oil and fenugreek seeds can make hair darker. Castor oil is known for its moisturising properties and can help improve hair shine and thickness. However, it does not contain any pigments or compounds that can darken hair. Similarly, claims suggesting that castor oil can treat cancerous breast tumours have also been debunked.
Fenugreek seeds are rich in nutrients like protein, iron, and vitamins, which can nourish hair and support growth. Some people believe they enhance hair colour, but no studies confirm they can make hair darker.
Hair colour mainly depends on genetics and melanin levels. Natural darkening is not possible through oils or herbal remedies. For darkening hair, hair dyes or henna are the proven options.
Are there any proven benefits of using castor oil and fenugreek for hair?
Yes, but they are limited to scalp health and hair conditioning. Castor oil is a good moisturiser and can help reduce dandruff due to its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Fenugreek has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that can soothe scalp irritation and improve scalp health. However, these benefits do not include preventing hair fall or darkening hair.
Are there any side effects of using castor oil and fenugreek powder on hair?
Yes, some people might experience side effects. Castor oil is very thick and can build up on the scalp, leading to irritation. It might also cause allergic reactions like itching or redness. In rare cases, excessive use can make hair tangled and matted. Its thickness can also make it hard to wash out, which may weigh down fine hair.
Fenugreek powder can leave residue on the scalp and may cause irritation or allergic reactions, especially in sensitive individuals. It can also interact with certain medications, such as blood thinners and diabetes medicines. If you are on any medications, consult your doctor before using fenugreek.
Doing a patch test before using castor oil or fenugreek is recommended to check for any allergic reactions.
What actually works for preventing hair fall and strengthening hair?
Effective hair fall prevention and strengthening require addressing the underlying causes. Proven treatments include:
Balanced diet: Sufficient protein, iron, and vitamins are essential for hair health.
-
Topical treatments: Minoxidil is clinically proven to promote hair growth.
-
Medication: Finasteride is prescribed for certain types of hair loss under medical supervision.
-
Stress management: Practising stress-reducing activities like yoga or meditation can help.
-
Consultation with a healthcare professional: Seeking expert advice ensures a customised treatment plan.
-
Dr Rashi Soni, Co-founder and Consulting Dermatologist at Rashi Hospital in Mumbai, says, “To prevent hair fall and strengthen hair, focus on a healthy diet rich in proteins, vitamins, and minerals. Gentle hair care practices, like avoiding harsh chemicals and heat styling, also help. Using mild shampoos and conditioners that suit your hair type is important. If hair loss is due to medical issues like hormonal changes or genetics, treatments like minoxidil or prescription medications may be needed. It’s best to consult a dermatologist for personalised advice.”
THIP Media Take
The claim that castor oil and fenugreek can stop hair fall and darken hair is mostly false. There is no scientific basis for the claim that castor oil and fenugreek powder can prevent hair fall, strengthen hair, or make it darker. They can improve scalp health and provide temporary shine but do not deliver the claimed benefits. For persistent hair concerns, consulting a healthcare professional is recommended.
