This incident is from Delhi and dates back to May 2022 when a man was thrashed by locals for allegedly molesting a 13-year-old girl. The audio was altered.
A video of a group of men assaulting a Muslim man in the middle of a road has been shared by many on social media. Some can be heard in the video demanding that he chant “Jai Shri Ram”.
While sharing the clip, people claimed "Some Hindutva terrorists are lynching Muslim man In the middle of the street, thrashing him brutality, forcing him to chant Jai Shri Ram."
India Today Fact Check found that the video is over two years old, and the audio has been altered.
OUR PROBE
Upon reverse-searching keyframes from this video, we came across an older and clearer version of the video posted to X in May 2022. This makes it clear that the incident is not recent. Moreover, this video contained no audio suggesting that the person was forced to chant “Jai Shri Ram”.
The post read: "Muslim man assaulted by a mob of Hindu extremists in Delhi, yesterday.” Notably, it did not mention the man being forced to chant “Jai Shri Ram”.
A subsequent search with keywords led us to a post by ANI on May 12, 2022, mentioning that the Delhi Police had arrested a person named Irfan Khan for allegedly stalking and misbehaving with a 13-year-old girl. A case under the POCSO Act was also registered.
Reportedly, the incident took place in the Shahdara district of Delhi and the 37-year-old man was arrested by the police after the family of the girl lodged a complaint alleging that Khan had been stalking her for a few days, and he also molested her en route to tuition.
TRACING THE AUDIO
In the audio of the viral video, some voices can be heard speaking in Hindi. Those words were, "Jai Shri Ram Bol. Bol na Jai Shri Ram. Jai Shri Ram bolne mein kya hain? Bolna padega. Jai Shri Ram bol aur jaa. Bol Jai Shri Ram. Meri baat sun."
A round of searches with relevant keywords led us to a YouTube video uploaded to a CNN-News18 report from August 29, 2021. This video depicted an incident from Mahidpur in the Ujjain district of Madhya Pradesh, where a vendor was caught in a communal brawl. Reportedly, he was forced by some to chant “Jai Shri Ram”.
After listening to the audio of this clip between seven and 23 seconds, it becomes clear that this audio was added to the video in question. The last words in the viral video and CNN-News18's video at the 23-second mark are the same: "Meri baat sun."
