| - Misleading: Video of Scotland football fan hit by motorcycle taken in 2021, not during Euro 2024
A 14-second video showing a man in a black outfit hit by a motorcycle while crossing the road was posted on X on June 15, 2024, with a caption that said: “When Scotland fans go to the EUROs.”
The post, which has been retweeted more than 3,000 times and gained more than 36,000 likes, was uploaded a day after the 2024 European Football Championship kicked off in Munich, with an opening match between Germany and Scotland. Hosts Germany beat Scotland 5-1 during the game.
The X account that shared the video is called “Not Match of the Day,” and it states in the bio that it is a parody account.
However, some users seemed to believe the video was related to Euro 2024.
“Revenge for the Ryan Porteous tackle,” said one user, in reference to the Scotland defender’s red card against Germany at the opening game.
“With that talent why’s he not on the Scottish bench,” read another reply.
The video also appeared on Instagram on June 16. Text on the clip read: “Scotland’s fan reenacts team’s opening clash vs. Germany at the Euros.” The caption also suggested the accident happened following Scotland’s defeat against Germany in Euro 2024.
However, the claim is misleading. The video was taken during the previous European Championship in London in 2021, not at this year’s tournament in Germany.
The video was previously posted by another X account @Jack85x in 2021. The 2021 clip is captioned: “Scottish fan in London.”
British tabloid The Sun reported on the video on June 17, 2021.
The first two paragraphs of the article read: “THIS is the shocking moment a drunk Scotland fan was knocked down by a motorbike in London – after stumbling straight into oncoming traffic.
“The Tartan Army supporter was filmed crashing into the vehicle as thousands of supporters descended on London ahead of tomorrow’s Euros clash against England at Wembley.”
London was one of the cities that hosted the 2020 UEFA European Championship in 2021, a year after the tournament was postponed due to the pandemic. The England-Scotland match ended in a 0-0 draw.
At the six-second mark of the video, the camera captures a red double-decker bus. It corresponds with the New Routemaster buses in London, as seen in photos published by the BBC.
Using some landmarks seen in the video, Annie Lab could geolocate the video: it was taken near the Euro Food and Wine store at Woburn Place, London.
