Fact Check
What is chiropractic treatment?
Chiropractic treatment is a form of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disorders of the musculoskeletal system, especially the spine. Chiropractors, who are healthcare professionals trained in chiropractic care, believe that body has the innate ability to heal itself, and that many health problems are caused by misalignments of the spine.
The core treatment in chiropractic care involves manual manipulation or adjustment of the spine. Chiropractors use their hands or specialized tools to apply controlled force to a joint, with the aim of restoring its mobility. The theory behind chiropractic treatment is that proper alignment of the musculoskeletal structure, particularly the spine, will enable the body to heal itself without the need for surgery or medication.
Can chiropractic treatment eliminate back pain in 5 minutes?
Maybe. While some people may experience immediate relief from back pain after a chiropractic adjustment, it’s not accurate to claim that chiropractic treatment can universally eliminate back pain in just 5 minutes. The effectiveness of chiropractic care can vary from person to person, including the severity of the pain, the underlying cause of the pain, and the individual’s response to treatment. In some cases, a single chiropractic adjustment can be very effective at relieving back pain. However, in other cases, multiple adjustments or other treatments may be necessary.
Sports Physiotherapist Viraj Pandya says, “Chiropractic treatment can not be a quick option to treat any pain. Moreover, it won’t heal the pain in 5 minutes, however, chiropractic is a vast subject, so it is difficult to comment on its effectiveness.”
Chiropractors often aim to provide relief by adjusting the spine to improve its alignment, reduce pressure on nerves, and enhance overall musculoskeletal function. This can lead to a reduction in pain for many individuals, but the extent and duration of relief can vary.
It’s essential to approach claims of rapid pain elimination with caution. While some people may experience immediate relief, others may require multiple sessions for sustained benefits. Additionally, the scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of chiropractic care for various conditions, including back pain, is not entirely consistent.
Abizar H Rangwala, MPT (Musculoskeletal and Sports Science), Assistant Professor at Chandigarh University, Punjab states, “Not exactly. If a person gets relief from pain and the vertebral joint gets fixed, it is only for a short duration. The long-term changes and pain relief can only come from correct ergonomics and postural correction exercises. If some weight lifters or housewives have a bending posture due to their daily routine, they will get extreme relief from chiropractic techniques, but as soon as they get into a normal routine without following the basics of strengthening and stretching exercises, then chiropractic is very rare to use. If a doctor recommends any patient for this technique, then they must ensure that the patient MUST follow the given exercises.”
If you are experiencing back pain, it’s advisable to consult with a healthcare professional to determine the underlying cause of the pain and explore appropriate treatment options. Chiropractic care can be a part of a comprehensive approach to managing back pain, but individual responses to treatment can differ, and it may not be a suitable or sufficient solution for everyone.
