An Instagram video suggests that mixing equal parts of watermelon seeds and poppy seeds, after making a powder, and drinking it in lukewarm water can cure high blood pressure and improve sleep.
Fact Check
Do these seeds actually cure high blood pressure and insomnia?
Not really. While watermelon seeds and poppy seeds are nutritious, there’s no solid evidence that they can treat or cure hypertension or insomnia. Currently, hypertension has no cure. So, while you can enjoy these seeds as part of a balanced diet, they won’t replace proper treatment for these conditions.
Interestingly, a 2022 review indicates that watermelon extract may help lower blood pressure, especially for those with hypertension. Extracts containing L-citrulline have been shown to reduce blood pressure levels in middle-aged adults and postmenopausal women when taken in sufficient amounts. However, it’s important to note that watermelon juice and whole watermelon snacks did not show the same benefits in healthy individuals.
Moreover, research from 2016 reveals that watermelon extract lowers blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels. Participants who took watermelon extract experienced reductions in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. However, these findings specifically apply to watermelon extracts, not to whole watermelon or its seeds. While the extract may help some individuals with high blood pressure, it is not a cure and may not work for everyone.
On the topic of sleep, poppy latex contains compounds that might help induce sleep, but poppy seeds lack these compounds. Most seeds found in stores are cleaned and will not aid in treating insomnia. Unwashed seeds can be risky, as they may contain harmful levels of morphine, leading to addiction. Therefore, poppy seeds are not a safe option for managing insomnia.
Shruti K Bhardwaj, Chief Clinical Nutritionist at Zydus Hospital, Ahmedabad, says, “If we look at the major causes of hypertension, such as obesity, stress, poor diet, irregular sleep, and high sodium intake, it’s misleading to claim that poppy seeds or watermelon alone can prevent hypertension or insomnia. No single food can address these complex conditions; a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle are essential.”
What really causes insomnia?
Insomnia can arise due to many things, from stress and anxiety to lifestyle habits like too much screen time or caffeine. Poor sleep environments, like noisy or bright rooms, can also disrupt sleep. Understanding these triggers can help manage insomnia better.
Dr Roma Kumar, Senior Consultant Psychologist, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital & Max Hospital, New Delhi, explains, “Insomnia is a genuine medical condition where individuals struggle to fall asleep, stay asleep, or may wake up too early and find it difficult to return to sleep. It’s not just occasional sleeplessness—when it persists, it can lead to serious health concerns such as anxiety, depression, and even heart problems. Therefore, it is crucial to recognise and treat insomnia early to prevent these complications.”
How does high blood pressure develop?
High blood pressure, or hypertension, is often linked to lifestyle factors like poor diet, lack of exercise, stress, and high salt intake. It can also be influenced by age and genetics. If left untreated, it can lead to serious health issues like heart attacks or strokes.
Why should we take these conditions seriously?
Insomnia affects mental health, causing issues like anxiety and depression. High blood pressure can damage the heart, kidneys, and other organs. Ignoring these conditions can lead to severe health problems, so they shouldn’t be taken lightly.
Can food alone treat high blood pressure or insomnia?
No, relying solely on food to treat these serious health conditions isn’t a good idea. A healthy diet can support better health, but it won’t replace professional advice or medication. Managing these conditions often requires a combination of lifestyle changes, medication, and guidance from healthcare professionals. Some people also suggest drinking banana peel tea for curing insomnia, but this does not work.
We connected with Dr Ubaid ur Rahman, General Physician at Holy Mission Clinic, New Delhi, for his expert take on foods for hypertension and insomnia. He says, “Seeds like watermelon and poppy are good additions to your diet, but they’re not miracle cures. Effective treatment for hypertension requires a broader approach, including medication, exercise, and diet.”

If you’re dealing with insomnia or high blood pressure, don’t just rely on home remedies. Speak to a healthcare professional. They can help you figure out the root cause and suggest the best treatment. Simple lifestyle changes like regular exercise, along with stress and dietary management for insomnia and hypertension can also make a big difference.
Dr Kumar further advises, “If you are facing issues with insomnia, it is important to seek support from a healthcare professional. Together, we can explore effective treatment options, including cognitive-behavioural therapy, good sleep hygiene, and necessary lifestyle changes. Simple steps like keeping a regular sleep schedule, creating a calm and comfortable sleep environment, and cutting down on caffeine can make a significant difference. Remember, managing insomnia with proven methods is essential for your overall health and well-being.”
Dr Harshil Shah, a psychiatrist affiliated with B.J Medical College and Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad, says, “Managing insomnia starts with practising good sleep habits. Simple steps like going to bed at the same time each night, switching off screens at least an hour before sleep, and avoiding afternoon naps can make a real difference. Light exercise, meditating for 15 minutes, or reading a calm, pleasant book before bed can also help improve sleep. Drinking warm milk or taking a hot shower before bedtime may promote relaxation. If stress, overthinking, or anxiety and depression are affecting your sleep, it’s important to seek support from a mental health professional, instead of relying on unproven remedies that aren’t backed by science.”
Ms. K Bharadwaj adds, “In today’s era of social media, with so much information readily available, it’s crucial to verify credentials before sharing or following advice. For better sleep, try having a lighter dinner, maintain a gap between eating and bedtime, and limit phone use before sleep. Simple habits like breathing exercises, meditation, or a casual walk after dinner can also help reduce insomnia.”
There’s a popular belief that applying a Bindi on the forehead can cure insomnia. However, this is a baseless claim.
