  • Fact Check: Fake screenshot of NDTV opinion poll predicting historic Congress victory in Karnataka goes viral The viral screenshot is photoshopped. NDTV's Poll of Polls is an exit poll, which is published once the election concludes. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This is a fake screenshot. NDTV has not published any such opinion poll. With the Karnataka assembly elections right around the corner, the internet right now is flooded with opinion polls full of myriad projections about which party might rule the southern state. Members and supporters of the state’s two major parties, the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party, of course, have shared various opinion polls favouring each. One post that’s been widely shared in the midst of this is a screenshot of what is being touted as an opinion poll by NDTV. The NDTV Poll of Polls, the supposed opinion poll, predicted a "historic victory" for the Congress party, projecting the party’s seat share would range between 131 and 142. A Twitter user while sharing a screenshot of this purported opinion poll wrote, "BREAKING NOW - KARNATAKA ELECTIONS. Most Opinion Polls are unanimously predicting that in Karnataka, BJP is staring at their biggest defeat due to huge anti-incumbency against 40% Commission govt.” The archived version of such posts can be seen here and here. India Today found that the viral screenshot is fake and misleading. NDTV's Poll of Polls is, in fact, an exit poll, which is published once the election concludes. Our Probe A keyword search for NDTV's Poll of Polls for the Karnataka assembly elections in 2023 yielded no result. This raised doubts about the veracity of the screenshot. We then ran a Twitter advanced search using relevant keywords combined with its Twitter handle @ndtv. Again, we failed to find any tweet announcing such an opinion poll for Karnataka. Next, we went through NDTV’s recent tweets and found that the media organisation had clarified that the viral screenshot was fake. The outlet, while sharing the viral screenshot with a warning label that said, “Fake”, wrote in the tweet: “Fake Tweet Alert | False posts on NDTV Poll of Poll tracker for Karnataka, being widely circulated, are misleading. Watch this space for the real #PollOfExitPolls on May 10th evening.” That means, Poll of Polls, which was pitched as an opinion poll, is indeed an exit poll, which is yet to be announced. The Election Commission, from time to time, issues notifications prohibiting the conducting of exit polls, and publishing the result of any exit poll during the period starting from the commencement of polls till half an hour after the closing of the poll. Thus, it’s clear that NDTV’s opinion poll did not project a massive Congress victory in Karnataka. Please share it on our at 73 7000 7000 You can also send us an email at factcheck@intoday.com
