  • Fact Check: Viral video of drug cartel shootout in Brazil actually shows filming of TV series This video shows the filming of a scene from the TV series "A Divisao", and not a real-life incident. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video shows the filming of a scene from a Brazilian TV series called "A Divisao". A disturbing video of a drive-by shootout has been widely shared on Twitter. The video shows two alleged members of a drug cartel in Brazil riding a bike through a narrow street and shooting at someone. Soon after, police officers could be seen following them. While sharing the video, a Twitter user wrote, "WATCH: Drug cartel shootings in broad daylight in Brazil." An archived version of the tweet can be seen here. India Today found that the viral video wasn't an actual event but the filming of a scene from a Brazilian series called "A Divisao". Our Probe A reverse image search of keyframes from the video led us to a Reddit post from July 2022 containing the same video. In one of the comments, a Reddit user said that this video showed the filming of a scene from the TV series "A Divisao" or "The Division". A subsequent keyword search led us to a news report by a Brazilian news portal, according to which, several residents of Tijuca, a densely populated neighbourhood in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, were alarmed by the noise of gunshots during the filming of the third season of the series. The report mentioned that "A Divisao" is a series set in the 90s, depicting police officers confronting drug dealers. The news article featured a collage of scenes shot from different angles. The series, as per IMDB, revolves around the kidnapping wave that affected Rio de Janeiro during the 90s. Furthermore, we found the viral video on YouTube, uploaded in July 2022, whose title described it as the filming of a scene from the third season of "A Divisao" in Brazil. Another YouTube upload contained a similar shot of the scene from a different angle, with the title stating, "Filming at Morro do Borel Tijuca." Morro do Borel is a favela or a slum located in Bairro da Tijuca in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil . Thus, it’s clear that a scene from a Brazilian TV series was falsely shared as a real-life incident.
