Quick Take
A social media post claims that baking soda can be used for hair growth. We fact-checked and found this claim to be mostly false.
The Claim
A social media post posted an image which shows a recipe for using baking soda for hair growth.
Fact Check
Is Baking soda safe to be used on hair?
No. Research suggests that using a product with a pH higher than 5.5 may damage the scalp. Baking soda which is also called sodium bicarbonate has a pH of about 9, which is considered a strong alkali or base. The pH of the scalp and the rest of the skin is about 5.5 and baking soda may damage the scalp.
Baking soda opens up the hair cuticles, which causes water absorption. While some moisture is good for the hair, too much absorption can weaken it. Higher pH levels may also increase static electricity and friction between the hair fiber which can damage fibers and lead to hair frizz.
Can baking soda be used for hair growth?
No. There is no scientific evidence to this claim.
Studies have shown multiple factors can help hair growth including essential oils, nutrition, massage, coffee based products etc. But there is no research based evidence in favour of baking soda.
Similar to baking soda, THIP MEDIA has come across claims that suggest doubling hair growth quickly at home. We have previously debunked the notions that coconut oil and aloe vera can make hair long, voluminous, and lustrous. In another article, we also debunked the idea that garlic helps with rapid hair growth.
