  • Last Updated on June 13, 2024 by Neelam Singh Quick Take A social media post claims that Padabhyanga can cure depression and anxiety. But, there is a lack of scientific evidence. Our fact check reveals it is only Half True. The Claim According to an Instagram post, practising Padabhyanga with a bronze bowl and pure cow ghee can cure depression and anxiety. Fact Check What is Padabhyanga? Padabhyanga, an Ayurvedic foot massage technique, involves methodically applying herbal oils to the feet. Rooted in the ancient principles of Ayurveda, this practice emphasises the importance of foot care for overall health. By massaging the feet with specific oils, you stimulate vital points known as marma points, which are thought to be interconnected with various organs and systems throughout the body. Additionally, the massage aims to balance the body’s doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—thereby promoting holistic well-being and restoring harmony within the body’s natural rhythms. Practising Padabhyanga regularly enhances physical relaxation, mental clarity, and emotional stability, contributing to an improved quality of life. What are the benefits of Padabhyanga? Padabhyanga, an ancient Ayurvedic foot massage technique, offers a range of benefits for both your feet and overall well-being. It helps make your feet softer, smoother, and less stiff, promoting better foot health by addressing issues like roughness and dryness. Moreover, Padabhyanga induces deep relaxation, which can lead to improved sleep quality and a heightened sense of well-being. Additionally, this massage technique has been associated with potential improvements in vision, contributing to its holistic appeal. Furthermore, Padabhyanga shows promise in providing relief for specific issues such as sciatica and nerve-related conditions. By employing gentle touches and specialised techniques, it aims to reduce pain and inflammation. Thus, offering a natural alternative for those seeking relief from discomfort. In essence, Padabhyanga serves as a gentle yet effective method for promoting both physical and mental wellness. Can Padabhyanga cure depression and anxiety? It’s hard to give a definite answer here, because it does help in managing stress and relaxation. But still, it is important to point out that it may not cure depression and anxiety, especially in severe cases. Even though Padabhyanga alleviates stress and promotes mental well-being, scientific evidence specifically linking this practice to curing anxiety and depression is scarce. Studies show foot massage can reduce stress and induce relaxation, which may help minimise symptoms of anxiety and depression. However, it is not a standalone cure, and we need more rigorous research to substantiate these claims. - Ayurvedic View: Supports the practice for mental health benefits through balancing doshas and stimulating marma points. In Ayurveda, every concept is in sutra form. However, the classic texts of Ayurveda don’t explain Padabhyanga or its process thoroughly. - Scientific Evidence: Foot massages generally help in stress reduction. But specific benefits from Padabhyanga using a bronze bowl and ghee lack substantial scientific backing. It is extremely important to differentiate between Ayurveda and superstition. Because in the name of Ayurveda several misconceptions or superstitions float around. What do experts say? Dr Annusuiya Gohil, MD Scholar, All India Institute of Ayurveda, shares her opinion, “Many benefits are attributed to Padabhyanga, particularly in terms of mental and physical relaxation, similar to reducing stress levels. However, it’s crucial to note that traditional descriptions of Padabhyanga typically involve the use of oil rather than specific elements like cow ghee and a bronze bowl. The practice helps in stress reduction and relaxation. But, it’s important to understand that it doesn’t guarantee a cure for depression.” Psychologist Dr Binda Singh states, “Depression is a disease and needs proper treatment. It can happen due to a variety of reasons, such as situational, trauma, physical health issues, etc. Depression needs intervention, which might include medication, counselling, positive thoughts, communication, etc.” What are the causes of depression? Almost 5% of adults suffer from depression, globally. Depression arises from a variety of factors, each playing a significant role in its development. Firstly, genetic predisposition is noteworthy, as individuals with a family history of depression are more susceptible to experiencing it themselves. Biological elements, like imbalances in brain chemicals called neurotransmitters and changes in hormones, also contribute to mood disturbances and the likelihood of depression. Furthermore, psychological factors such as low self-esteem and negative thought patterns, coupled with environmental stressors like traumatic experiences and ongoing stress, further intensify depressive symptoms. Recognising these primary causes is vital for effective prevention and treatment. This can include both biological interventions and psychological support strategies. What is the best method to treat depression? Effective treatments for depression generally include a combination of therapies and lifestyle changes. Here are some of the best methods: - Psychotherapy: Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), interpersonal therapy (IPT). - Medications: Antidepressants like Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and Serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). - Lifestyle Changes: Regular exercise, healthy diet, adequate sleep. - Alternative Therapies: Mindfulness, yoga, acupuncture. - Support Systems: Family support, support groups. How to reduce anxiety? Managing anxiety involves using different strategies to feel better. Talking to a therapist or counsellor can help you learn how to cope with anxious thoughts and face your fears in a gradual way. Sometimes, doctors might prescribe medications to help with anxiety. But it’s important to use them safely and under their guidance. Besides therapy and medications, doing things like exercising regularly, eating well, and getting enough sleep can also make a big difference. Relaxation techniques like meditation, taking deep breaths and Padabhyanga can help calm your mind when you’re feeling overwhelmed. And, having supportive people around you, like friends or family, who understand what you’re going through can be really helpful too. In conclusion, Padabhyanga may offer some relief from symptoms of anxiety and depression through its relaxing effects. However, it is not a cure. Hence the claim is only true. Comprehensive treatment should involve evidence-based medical and therapeutic interventions.
