India Today Fact Check
The video is almost six years old and has nothing to do with the ongoing Israel-Hamas skirmish.
Lebanese militant group Hezbollah and the Israeli military have reportedly been exchanging artillery fire since the latest Israel-Hamas conflict began. Hezbollah also announced the death of ten of their fighters in these clashes.
Now, a video making the rounds on social media purports to show Hezbollah rockets directed towards Israel being fired from a hilly region.
On X, a user shared the video and wrote, “Hezbollah (Lebanon), is going full-scale war against The State of Israel Hamas was just a puppet, Arab wanted to start war with Israel. Iran is very much keen to join the Israel-Hamas war. IT IS CLEAR NOW. IT IS A GREAT CONSPIRACY AGAINST ISRAEL.”
The video was widely shared on Twitter and Facebook with similar claims. An archived version of one such post can be seen here.
India Today found the video is almost six years old and has nothing to do with the ongoing Israel-Hamas skirmish.
Our Probe
With the help of the Invid tool, we reverse-searched keyframes from the video and found a Turkish news report containing the viral video along with a compilation of other clips. The title of the report suggested that these clips showed the Turkish Armed Forces attacking Kurdish targets in Afrin, Syria.
Using relevant keywords, we found a January 2018 YouTube video shared by the Turkish news agency Ihlas featuring the same clip in the beginning followed by some other similar videos. The video’s description stated that this was part of "Operation Olive Branch", launched by the Turkish Armed Forces on January 20, 2018, to “neutralise terrorists of Kurdish groups and Islamic state in Afrin.”
Turkish news outlet TRT Haber also shared the same video on January 20, 2018, stating that Turkish forces hit targets in Afrin with multi-barrel rocket launchers. Other Turkish News channels like 24TV also used the video in their reports alongside the same information. Russian state-controlled news outlet RT also tweeted a similar video showing multiple rockets being fired by “Turkish forces” in Afrin.
An Al Jazeera report from the time noted that Turkey launched the operation with Russia’s backing. The national army of Syria was also reportedly part of this operation. Per a Reuters report, Turkey took full control of the Afrin region in March 2018.
So, while we could not independently verify where the video was shot, it’s more than clear that it has nothing to do with the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
