In March 2023, many international news outlets reported on this incident. What is happening in Congo? The mineral-rich eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo has been an area of conflict for more than 30 years, since the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Located by the Rwandan border, Goma is an important trading and transport hub. It is within the reach of mining towns supplying gold, tin and coltan, a key component in mobile phones and batteries for electric vehicles. The rebel group currently involved in conflict with the army in Congo is the M23 or the March 23 Movement. It is one of the more than 100 armed groups fighting Congo forces in DRC. It is present in North Kivu province in areas bordering Rwanda and Uganda and has more than 8,000 fighters, according to the United Nations.
