| - Green announced during a Feb. 5, 2025, speech on the House of Representatives floor that he "will" introduce articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump.
Green did not officially bring articles of impeachment during his speech and has not filed them as of this writing. A spokesperson for Green's office said the lawmaker has not said when he will file them.
Green has a history of filing long-shot impeachment bids. During Trump's first term, he introduced a resolution on impeaching the president that only 58 of the 435 House members supported.
On Feb. 5, 2025, social media users spread a claim that U.S. Rep. Al Green, a Democrat from Texas, had announced on the House floor that he filed articles of impeachment — documents that include written charges explaining why someone should be removed from office — against President Donald Trump.
Posts on X and Bluesky claimed Green either "filed," "officially introduced" or "brought" articles of impeachment against Trump.
While it is true Green announced that he plans to bring impeachment articles against Trump, he has not filed those documents as of this writing and his speech did not include a presentation of articles of impeachment. Thus, we rate this claim a mixture of truth and falsehood.
In a speech on the House of Representatives floor the morning of Feb. 5, Green announced he is planning to bring articles of impeachment after Trump said the previous day that the United States would "take over" Gaza (emphasis ours):
Ethnic cleansing has been a crime against humanity. And I stand here today in the well to denounce what was said, to denounce what the president said, to denounce the complicity of the prime minister of Israel, and to remind people that Dr. King was right. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. And injustice in Gaza is a threat to justice in the United States of America. I rise to announce that the movement to impeach the president has begun. I rise to announce that I will bring articles of impeachment against the president for dastardly deeds proposed and dastardly deeds done.
A video of Green's remarks is available on C-SPAN's YouTube page. Green's X account also posted the video with the caption "Impeachment Announced by Congressman Al Green."
The key phrase in Green's speech is that he "will" bring articles of impeachment — he did not say he had already, and Green has not filed articles of impeachment as of this writing. A spokesperson from his office, Teque'lia Lewis, said in an emailed statement: "Congressman Green will bring articles of impeachment but has not stated when."
A search through Green's recent legislative actions on the House website also returned no articles of impeachment filed in 2025 as of this writing, nor did a search for articles of impeachment filed against Trump since his inauguration on Jan. 20.
Green has a history of long-shot impeachment bids against Trump, reportedly without his party's approval. In 2017, he introduced a resolution to impeach Trump on the basis of the president "associating the majesty and dignity of the presidency with causes rooted in white supremacy, bigotry, racism, anti-Semitism, white nationalism, or neo-Nazism." Only 58 members of the 435-person House voted in support.
Some reputable news outlets reported that Democratic leaders said they are not seriously considering Green's 2025 move for impeachment. Green acknowledged his history of introducing impeachment resolutions and his lack of party support in his Feb. 5 speech:
I did it before. I laid the foundation for impeachment, and it was done. Nobody knows more about it than I. And I know that it is time for us to lay the foundation again. On some issues it is better to stand alone than to not stand at all. On this issue, I stand alone, but I stand for justice.
During Trump's first term, the House of Representatives impeached him twice — but the Senate failed to meet the two-thirds majority vote required to find him guilty of the charges brought in articles of impeachment. As a result, Trump was not removed from office.
