  • Fact Check: Muslim shrine demolished in Bangladesh now viral as Hindu temple India Today Fact Check found that this video was shot on August 29 in Sirajganj, Bangladesh, when the shrine of Hazrat Baba Ali Pagla was destroyed by locals. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video shows the shrine of Muslim saint Hazrat Baba Ali Pagla being destroyed in Sirajganj, Bangladesh. On November 30, various news outlets reported at least three attacks on Hindu temples in Bangladesh following the arrest of ISKCON priest Chinmoy Krishna Das on sedition charges. A video now going viral on social media allegedly shows Muslims destroying a Hindu temple in Bangladesh. The footage shows several people, many sporting skull caps, demolishing a building. An X user shared the clip on December 2 and wrote “See how Hindu temples were vandalised, and Hindu devotees were beaten up in different cities of Bangladesh yesterday. But the whole world is silent on the massacre of Hindus in Bangladesh.” Its archive can be seen here. India Today Fact Check found that this video from August 29 shows locals destroying the shrine of a Muslim saint Hazrat Baba Ali Pagla in Bangladesh’s Sirajganj. Our Probe A reverse image search of keyframes from the viral video directed us to the same clip shared by a Facebook user on August 30. The post said the clip was from the shrine of Hazrat Baba Ali Pagla. A subsequent search led us to a video on the official YouTube channel of Bangladeshi news outlet Metro TV on August 29. A detailed analysis of the video reveals a direct match with the viral clip. The headline of the video said this showed the shrine of Ali Pagla, located in Kazipur in Bangladesh’s Sirajganj, being demolished. On August 31, a report was published by the Bangladeshi news outlet Kal Bela, which featured a screenshot from the viral video. The report stated that on August 29, the shrine of the Muslim saint Hazrat Baba Ali Pagla was demolished in Shalgram, located in the Mansurnagar union of the Kazipur upazila in Bangladesh’s Sirajganj district. The demolition was carried out under the direction of Golam Rabbani, a local imam. Following this, Rabbani was reportedly dismissed from his position. A report in BDNews24 said Shalgram locals were angry with the imam, the primary accused in the demolition of the shrine. One local said, "How can Golam Rabbani, as a Muslim, destroy the shrine of another Muslim? Therefore, we have decided not to pray behind such an Imam and have dismissed him from his position." Thus, it’s clear the viral clip does not show a Hindu temple being demolished.
