No, that's not true: A NATO official called the claim "unfounded," and, additionally, there's no evidence of deployment due to threats from Donald Trump. However, some NATO allies have discussed dispatching troops to the Danish territory if Denmark requests help. The claim appeared in a post (archived here) on X by political activist Laura Loomer on February 7, 2025. The post's caption said: BREAKING: NATO to deploy troops to Greenland in order to defend it from US annexation. I guess NATO also forgot who funds NATO... This is what the post looked like at the time of writing: (Source: X screenshot taken on Fri February 7 17:20:08 2025 UTC) This post did not provide any evidence to support the assertion that NATO is sending troops to Greenland to defend it from the United States. Google search A Google News search (archived here) using the question "Is NATO sending troops to Greenland to defend it from the United States?" found no evidence to support this claim as of February 7, 2025. However, multiple news organizations reported that NATO allies discussed sending troops to Greenland following Trump's threats. Screenshots of some of the stories from the search appear below: (Source: Google screenshots taken on Fri Feb 7 2025 UTC) Lead Stories also used Google Advanced Search on February 7, 2025, to check NATO's official X account and found only three references to "Greenland." None of the posts mentioned sending troops there. NATO In a February 7, 2025, email, a NATO official called the claim in the social media post "unfounded," adding, "We don't have any new initiatives to announce." On the NATO website (archived here), Lead Stories searched the organization's press releases for any mention of "Greenland" but found none.
