India Today Fact Check
Both photos date back to September 2021. While these demonstrations were also carried out by Bolsonaro supporters, they are not from the recent rioting in the Brazilian capital.
Supporters of the former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro stormed the Congress, the Supreme Court, and the Presidential Palace in Brasilia on January 8 after months of protests alleging election fraud. This comes around a week after Bolsonaro’s rival, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was sworn in as the 39th President of Brazil.
Bolsonaro has constantly denied his defeat in the elections stoking anti-democratic sentiments in his far-right followers. However, following the insurrection, reminiscent of the January 2021 attack on the US Capitol in Washington DC, he denied any role in encouraging the rioters on Twitter.
Meanwhile, two images have gone viral with these events in the backdrop. The first is an image of a man with yellow and green body paint wearing a horned and feathered headgear. The second is the photograph of the American conspiracy theorist Jake Angeli, also known as the QAnon Shaman, who had participated in the attack on the US Capitol building on January 6, 2021.
A Twitter user shared these photos with the caption, “This Brazil protest going on must be CIA work behind the scenes. One picture is from the Jan 6th protests at the US capital and the other is from today in Brazil. You would think they would make it look less obvious.” The archived version of this post can be seen here.
Another image that has been widely shared shows a sea of people in a large area. A Twitter user shared this image with the caption, “A Massive Crowd Scene from Sundays Election Protest in Brazil.” The archived version of this post can be seen here.
AFWA found that both the viral images are from 2021 and thus are not related to the recent demonstrations in Brazil.

Using reverse search, we found this the first image of the headgeared man in a September 7, 2021, report published in the Brazilian news website Brasil de Fato. Per this report, it was from Sao Paulo, Brazil. The photo was credited to photographer Guilherme Gandolfi.
Gandolfi, a professional photographer based in Sao Paulo, shared this photo on his Twitter on January 9 and wrote in Portuguese that he was the one who shot it in the Avenida Paulista avenue of Sao Paulo on September 7, 2021, during a protest called by Bolsonaro.
In September 2021, multiple Brazilian websites had carried this image in their reports. As per these reports, the man with yellow-green body paint participated in a demonstration on Brazilian Independence Day. His look was reportedly inspired by the aforementioned American conspiracy theorist Jake Angeli.
A reverse search of the photo of the sea of protestors image led us to a September 7, 2021, report published in a Brazilian news website. As per the report, this photo was the aerial view of a demonstration in Brazil in favour of Bolsonaro. Many other Brazilian news websites had also carried the same image in their September 2021 reports.
All these reports stated that this image was taken in Brazil’s capital Brasilia where thousands of people had gathered to show their support for Bolsonaro on September 7, 2021.
The visuals of the recent Brazil riots can be seen in this New York Times report.
Thus, we concluded that both images were from 2021 and unrelated to the recent riots.
