| - CLAIM: Here is video footage of ED apparently snubbing not just Chiwenga’s attempted handshake, but also follow-up attempted conversations.
SOURCE: Brighton Mutebuka
VERDICT: False
An account on X, formerly Twitter, with over 24,000 followers, posted a video claiming that President Emmerson Mnangagwa snubbed his vice president Constantino Chiwenga.
The full post reads, ‘ED’s tantrum? Here is video footage of ED apparently snubbing not just Chiwenga’s attempted handshake, but also follow-up attempted conversations. If true, it suggests ED is irritated & raffled & prone to miscalculation!’
The short twenty five second video shows the president in front of his VP but not shaking hands with him. He instead shakes hands with the VP’s wife who is next to her husband.
President Mnangagwa then proceeds to shake hands with another person before going back to take a seat next to VP Chiwenga.
Snubbed or not?
The video was taken at the National Heroes Acre where the late Tinaye Chigudu was buried on February 10, 2025.
The event was carried live by the national broadcaster ZBC. Just after the 4 hour mark, the live event shows the President arriving and at approximately 4:02:48, he shakes VP Chiwenga’s hand.
The video posted by Mutebuka has been edited in such a way that the President’s handshake with the VP is not seen.
This is made possible by the President’s pause to make way for his wife who had gone ahead of him. As a result, he steps back after shaking hands with Chiwenga and makes way for the First Lady to pass between them. It is at this point that the 26 second video starts.
Videos edited to remove context
Videos edited to remove context can be very deceptive, but there are some telltale signs you can look for. Here’s a breakdown of how to spot them:
Visual Clues:
Jump Cuts/Abrupt Transitions: Sudden, unexplained shifts in the video’s visuals or audio can indicate where edits have been made. Look for unnatural breaks in the flow of the video. While jump cuts are sometimes used intentionally for stylistic purposes, they can also be used to remove crucial parts of a conversation or event.
-
Missing Elements: Does something seem to be missing? Is a person suddenly there or gone without explanation? Does the background change unexpectedly? These inconsistencies can suggest editing.
-
Changes in Lighting/Sound: Abrupt changes in the lighting or sound quality within a scene can suggest an edit. While these can happen naturally, combined with other red flags, they become more suspicious.
-
Blurring/Pixelation: While sometimes used for privacy, blurring or pixelating parts of the video can also be used to obscure information that would provide context. Be wary of excessive or poorly done blurring.
-
Zooming/Cropping: Unusual or excessive zooming or cropping can be used to hide parts of the scene that would provide context. Pay attention to how the framing changes and whether it seems natural.
-
Content Clues:
Out-of-Order Events: Does the sequence of events make sense? If things seem out of order or illogical, it could indicate that parts of the video have been rearranged.
-
Missing Information: Does the video seem to be missing key details? If you’re left with unanswered questions or the narrative feels incomplete, it’s possible that context has been removed.
-
Emotional Manipulation: Be wary of videos that seem designed to elicit a strong emotional reaction without providing sufficient context. They may be cherry-picking moments to create a false impression.
-
Check for Original Source: If possible, try to find the original, unedited version of the video. This can help you determine what, if anything, has been changed.
-
Consider the Source: Who posted the video? What is their agenda? Are they a reliable source of information? Being aware of the source’s potential biases can help you evaluate the video’s credibility.
-
Conclusion
The video showing President Mnangagwa ‘snubbing’ VP Chiwenga does not show the full context. It has been edited to cut out earlier footage where the two can be clearly seen shaking hands. The 26 second clip is cut out from a more than 4 hour live event of a national heroes acre burial. Therefore, the claim that ‘Here is video footage of ED apparently snubbing not just Chiwenga’s attempted handshake, but also follow-up attempted conversations’ is rated false.
