The video is a deepfake. It was created using a Dec. 14 appearance Warren made on MSNBC, where she did not suggest restricting Republicans’ voting rights in the 2024 presidential election.

Warren clashed with Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell over comments he made about increasing the unemployment rate and inflation Tuesday, according to Quartz. Warren alleged that Powell is going to “get people fired over the next year,” Business Insider reported.
The Twitter video, viewed over 300,000 times, purports to show Warren talking about Republicans’ voting rights in the 2024 presidential election during an MSNBC appearance. “So restricting republican voting would be more fair to our democracy. Did she seriously just say that,” the video’s caption reads.
The video is a deepfake. The claim originally stems from TikTok, where a hashtag included in the video’s caption indicates it’s a deepfake. “Elizabeth Warren says Republicans shouldn’t be allowed to vote. #elizabethwarren #deepfake #parody,” the video’s caption reads. “A deepfake refers to a specific kind of synthetic media where a person in an image or video is swapped with another person’s likeness,” according to the MIT Sloan School of Management. Deepfakes are typically created using a facial recognition algorithm and variational auto-encoders, also according to the website. To create a deepfake, an individual would use the algorithm and encoders to swap one person’s face with another.
The deepfake video of Warren was created using a Dec. 14 appearance she made on MSNBC. In the clip, Warren claimed that Republicans have campaigned on the idea of the government being “terrible” and “inept,” while Democrats have demonstrated “exactly the opposite.” At no point does Warren suggest restricting Republicans’ voting rights in the 2024 presidential election.
There are no credible news reports suggesting Warren made the purported remark. Likewise, the remark neither appears on the democratic senator’s website nor on her verified social media accounts. In addition, MSNBC has not publicly addressed the purported remark.
Check Your Fact contacted a Warren spokesperson, who declined to comment but instead directed us to a Boston.com article indicating the video of the Democratic senator was a deepfake.
