  • FACT CHECK: Does This Image Show An Alligator Swimming In A Florida Home After Hurricane Ian In September 2022? An image shared on Facebook allegedly shows an alligator swimming in a house in Florida flooded by Hurricane Ian in September 2022. Verdict: False This image is digitally edited. It is unrelated to Hurricane Ian and has been spread online since at least 2020. Fact Check: Flesh-eating illnesses, known as Vibrio vulnificus infections, have spiked in Florida following Hurricane Ian, which has killed four as of Oct. 18, according to BBC News. Hundreds of citizens remain in shelters following the storm’s landfall, The New York Times reported. The Facebook image claims to show an alligator swimming in a flooded Florida home after Hurricane Ian made landfall. “My dawg in Florida sent me this n said he woke up and came downstairs the gator was looking at him just like this I would of died!” the image’s text reads. This image is photoshopped. Check Your Fact found the same edited photo in a Reddit post from 2020. The crocodile appears to be photoshopped from an image featured in a 2014 Daily Mail article. The Daily Mail credits Adelaide River Cruises for taking the photo. Check Your Fact has reached out to the company for comment and will update this piece accordingly if one is received. (RELATED: Did Nobody Die In Cuba When Hurricane Ian Struck?) One social media user posted the image on Twitter, claiming that it showed a crocodile in a house after the floods in Bangalore, India. These floods occurred Sep. 5 after heavy rain flooded several residents’ homes, BBC News reported. Check Your Fact could not independently verify where the image of the flooded house stemmed from. This is not the first time misinformation has spread involving animals displaced due to Hurricane Ian. Check Your Fact previously debunked a video that claimed to show a seal in the streets of Florida after the hurricane made landfall.
