The viral video is from April 2021 and shows a brawl that broke out over overhead luggage space on a Tunisia-bound flight.
A video of a vicious brawl in an aeroplane has gone viral. In it, a male passenger can be seen grabbing a woman's hair, pulling her backwards, and punching her. Many who shared the clip on social media claimed that the man attacked the woman for not wearing a hijab.
One Facebook user wrote while sharing the video, “Avoid Turkey and Turkish Airlines. An American female passenger who was travelling in a Turkish airliner was caught by Muslim men by her hair, and they started beating her because she was not wearing a hijab.” The archived version of such a post can be seen here.
India Today Fact Check found that the video has no communal angle. The brawl was caused by a disagreement over overhead luggage space.
Our Probe
A reverse search of keyframes from the viral video led us to an Instagram post from April 12, 2021. In the post, the same video was shared with the caption, “Flight attendants try to break up a fight between passengers over the seat.”
Taking a clue from this, we searched about the incident using relevant keywords and found many news reports that contained the viral video in them. According to reports, the video was filmed on Tunisair flight TU216 at Istanbul Airport, Turkey. Tunisair is the national airline of Tunisia.
Reportedly, a disagreement over overhead luggage space was the reason behind the altercation onboard the Tunisia-bound flight. The incident reportedly delayed the flight by five hours.
According to the Daily Mail, the shocking incident occurred on April 10. According to the Independent, some passengers had allegedly brought too much carry-on luggage and refused to pay extra to store it in the cabin. “An investigation has been opened,” an airline spokesperson told reporters at the time, adding that the passengers who started the incident could be prosecuted.
We also found the video on The Sun’s YouTube channel as well, uploaded more than two years ago. According to this video report, too, the brawl was caused by overhead luggage space.
Thus, it is more than clear to say that a video of a two-year-old brawl was falsely shared with a communal spin.
