  • Fact Check: Tale of a different tragedy - video of sobbing girl is from Syria, NOT Gaza This video shows a child from a displacement camp in Syria talking about harsh living conditions. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video was shot in a displacement camp in northern Syria. It has nothing to do with Israel or Palestine. As the Israeli offensive into Gaza continues, a video allegedly showing a young Palestinian girl sobbing was widely shared. According to the subtitles of the video, she spoke about her horrific living conditions in Gaza saying, “Death is better than all these things that have happened.” Sharing this video on Facebook, one person wrote, “Children should not feel this way,” along with hashtags like “Genocide in Gaza” and “Israeli Terrorists”. India Today Fact Check found that this video is from Syria. It has no connection with the ongoing situation in Israel and Palestine. Our Probe A reverse search of keyframes from the viral video led us to a Facebook post containing the video in question, dated January 9. The caption is Arabic, loosely translated to English, read: “Sham. A displaced Syrian girl talks about her wishes and harsh living conditions in a tent in one of the camps in the Idlib countryside.” On the top-right corner of this video, we saw the logo of Al Jazeera. Using this clue, we found an extended version of this video on the YouTube channel of Al Jazeera Mubasher, shared on January 8. According to Al Jazeera, this was a Syrian girl called Sham, narrating the ordeal of her displaced family after their tent burned down in northern Syria. According to the text inside the video, the clip was shot on January 1, 2024, at a displacement camp in northern Syria. Many Syrian media outlets also shared and reported about this video around the time also shared and reported ( Further, we found that Al Jazeera Syria’s Facebook page credited this clip to Emergency Response Team, a non-profit organisation based in northern Syria. The organisation’s Instagram page also shared this video on January 7. Its caption stated that this was Sham, a Syrian girl whose family does not have a roof over their heads since their tent was destroyed. This page shared several other similar clips of Syrian people in need of help. Per reports. harsh winters have added to the sufferings of displaced Syrian people.
