Fact Check
Is covid vaccine damaging kidneys among children in Indonesia?
It does not seem so. The available evidence is not enough to confirm covid vaccine is causing acute kidney injury among children in Indonesia. On the contrary, the Indonesian health ministry refuted this claim in a statement released on October 18, 2022. The statement clearly states that the incidents of acute kidney failure are not linked to the covid vaccine.
We researched more to find the reason behind such a claim on social media. As a result, we found an article published in an Indonesian media website which shows there is a spike in cases of kidney damage among children. As of October 31, 2022, the Indonesian health ministry has recorded 159 cases.
A social media post shows a women suffering from stevens johnson syndrome. Users claimed that SJS is caused by Covid vaccine.
We also found another article in which the Indonesian health minister blamed ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol for the spike in cases of acute kidney injuries. As these chemicals are found in medicinal syrups, the Indonesian government temporarily banned medicinal syrups. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) website, deaths from acute kidney injury have also been reported in other countries and are linked to contaminated cough and cold syrups.
The Indonesian Pediatric Association (IDAI) website informs the children needs to be at least six years old to get vaccinated.
