The suspect created a manifesto shared on Google Docs May 12 that repeatedly mentioned the “great replacement theory,” a conspiracy theory that suggests white Americans are systematically being replaced, according to NBC News. The manifesto said the shooter drove to Buffalo based on the area’s high black population and the fact that it “isn’t that far away,” CBS News reported. Erie County Sheriff John Garcia deemed the shooting a “straight-up racially motivated hate crime,” according to CNN. U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said the agency was investigating the crime as an act of “racially motivated violent extremism,” the outlet reported. Check Your Fact found no credible news reporting to suggest Salter Jr.’s work on water-based cars was a motivation for the attack.
