India Today Fact Check
This video is not from India but from Colombia. It was recorded in the village of Puerto Mosquito in June 2022.
We’ve all probably heard tales from our grandparents about how in the days of yore, they had to scale mountains and cross rivers to go to school. Whether or not those stories were exaggerations, a video that is now viral appears to demonstrate that this might be the case for some even today.
In the video, a girl in a school uniform crosses a turbulent stream using a makeshift zipline. Those sharing the video appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to look into the matter and help make things easier for the girl and others like her.
The video was shared on Facebook as well. The archived version of such a post can be seen here.
AFWA's investigation found that the video is not from India at all — it's from a village in Colombia in South America.
AFWA PROBE
A reverse search of keyframes from the viral video led us to a Times of India report from November 2022. The report, however, did not mention where the video was shot.
In the ToI report, however, we found a tweet that shared the clip along with the Spanish text: “He who does not study is because he does not want to.”
When we searched for Spanish keywords related to the video, came across another tweet in Spanish that was shared on June 15, 2022, with the “Magdalena” hashtag in its caption. Magdalena is a department in Colombia located in the northern part of the country.
It also mentioned that the video was shot in the village of Puerto Mosquito near the city of Santa Marta, where students needed to cross the Gaira River using makeshift ziplines to attend school.
It also mentioned that the video was shot in the village of Puerto Mosquito near the city of Santa Marta, where students needed to cross the Gaira River using makeshift ziplines to attend school.
A subsequent search with keywords in Spanish led us to multiple news reports from Colombia that reported on this video. One such article published on June 15, 2022, also noted that the video was captured in the village of Puerto Mosquito, northeast of the city of Santa Marta.
Reportedly, this dangerous practice became a routine affair for a group of students from the Narakajmanta community. The report also quoted the education secretary of Santa Marta, Antonio Peralta, who reacted to this video and stated, “It is a delicate situation and we assume it responsibly, and we are going to see how lines of action are drawn up for them. Actions must be taken on time."
Another news report quoted a local leader who said that this had been their situation since 2008 and several people had even lost their lives trying to cross the river similarly.
Thus, it is more than clear that a video from Colombia was falsely shared as Indian.
