India Today Fact Check
The video of a man walking on the water is not real, but a visual magic trick. There are a few ways this can be achieved.
The mythical superhuman task of “walking on water” has been a source of endless fascination since time immemorial. Many have tried to recreate this feat but with little success. But a strange video circulating on social media seems to suggest that someone may just have pulled it off.
A Twitter user on April 28, 2023, while sharing the clip of a man visibly standing on the water in a swimming pool and then miraculously walking on the water, wrote, "The moment a man walked on water". The archived version of the tweet can be seen here.
India Today’s investigation, however, found that this was a visual trick by Julius Dein, an internet celebrity who creates viral comedy and magic videos.
Our Probe
A reverse search of keyframes from the video led us to an Instagram account with almost seven million followers. The account belonged to Julius Dein, a magician from London, UK, the man seen walking on water in the viral video.
We also found the longer version of the viral video, uploaded to his Instagram on May 25, 2021. We also found the same video on Dein's official Facebook account, posted on May 24, 2021. There, he wrote, "Magician Walks on Water!". The same video was also uploaded on his YouTube channel at the same time with the same title.
Julius Dein is a London-born magician. He has huge followers on Facebook, Instagram and other social media platforms. In January 2023, he visited India and helped an old ragpicker couple through his magic performance, which at the time went viral on social media.
How is this trick performed?
A keyword search on the internet led us to a Youtube channel named Magic Secrets Revealed. There, we found a video explaining the trick. Magicians, according to the channel, often use clear plexiglass ramps underwater to perform this trick.
India Today also reached out to renowned magician PC Sorcar Jr. He and his daughter Maneka made headlines in 2008 by cycling on water.
Sorcar told us, "We also researched about it. There is a trick behind it. It is not possible to do it with Mantra Tantra but can be done with tricks. Without exposing the secrets of the magic, I can tell you a game that will give a hint. Tie a gas balloon on the head of a stick and a string in the middle of the same stick. Let it float on the water. After that just make the balloon and string invisible using the trick. You will feel that the stick is floating on the water. All science and illusion. There is a slogan in the magic world: Do not trust your eyes that much."
India Today has also reached out to Julius Dein to further confirm how he performed this feat. This story will be updated as and when we receive a response.
