Our Probe
Given the sensational nature of an egg-throwing incident involving President Macron, it is only likely that such a thing would be reported by international outlets. However, we found no such reports related to his Egypt visit. Instead, we came across two prior instances where Macron had encountered similar situations, one in 2017 and another in 2021.
In September 2021, Macron was struck by an egg in Lyon, France. Notably, at the time, he was wearing a mask amid the Covid-19 pandemic. But in the 2017 incident, he wasn’t wearing a mask and an egg hit his forehead. Photos in news reports about this incident resembled the viral clip.
According to an Express UK report dated March 1, 2017, a protester at an agricultural event in Paris lobbed an egg at the President. The egg struck him directly on the forehead during the incident. Among other news portals, this incident was also reported by ETV Telengana in March 2017.
We also found that the original was shared on the official Facebook Page of Le Petit Journal on March 1, 2017, with a French caption that translates to, “When Emmanuel Macron goes to the agricultural show."
Hence, it is evident that a 6-year-old video from Paris has been falsely shared as a recent incident in Egypt.
