  • Fact Check: Video of car floating backwards in waterlogged Hyderabad streets is from 2020 The video showing a car getting swept away in a waterlogged Hyderabad street was shared as a recent incident. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video shows an incident that took place in Hyderabad back in October 2020. The India Meteorological Department's Met Centre issued a red alert for various districts of Hyderabad due to heavy rains in Telangana, causing waterlogging and inundation in low-lying regions. Amid this, a shocking video of a car being swept away in a waterlogged street with people watching from their balconies started circulating on social media. Many claimed that this incident happened recently during heavy rains in Hyderabad. Sharing the clip on Twitter, one person wrote, "Present situation of Hyderabad. No MLA, no corporator, no officer inspecting besides. Enjoying pakodas at their residences." An archived version of this post can be found here. India Today verified that the video is indeed from Hyderabad, but it dates back to October 2020. Our Probe A reverse search of keyframes from the viral clip led us to a YouTube video from 2020. The video contained several clips of waterlogged streets, and among them was the one currently going viral. The video's description mentioned that these incidents occurred during heavy rains in Hyderabad. Further, we found a Facebook post containing an extended version of the viral video where the red car being swept away could be seen piling on top of a stationary car in the waterlogged street. Another video shot from a different angle captured what happened next – another car floated backwards, pushing the red on top of another car, resulting in three cars piled up on the street. Several media outlets, including NDTV news, shared the video of this incident in October 2020. Crux News, a part of Network 18, shared the video, reporting that over ten people, including a two-month-old baby, lost their lives to heavy rains that battered Telangana. The weather department had reportedly issued a red alert for Telangana districts on October 17, 2020, predicting heavy to very heavy rains across the state for the next five days. According to a report by Indian Express dated October 14, 2020, Hyderabad recorded 191.8mm rainfall— the highest October rainfall reported in Telangana’s capital since 1903. The causal weather, which originated in the Bay of Bengal, hit the east coast and moved westward later. While many areas in Hyderabad remained stranded in heavy rainfall, and visuals of waterlogged streets are emerging from the state, the video in question is approximately three years old.
