  • Recently, a video showing two men assaulting three women has been circulated on social media, accompanied by claims that it depicts an attempt by radical Muslim men to publicly kill a Hindu woman. Posts spreading this claim on X can be found here (Archive), here (Archive), and here (Archive). Posts spreading this claim on Facebook can be found here (Archive), here (Archive), and here (Archive). Fact Check Rumor Scanner’s investigation revealed that the video in question is not related to any recent incident. Instead, it dates back to 2022 and depicts an assault related to a long-standing dispute over jackfruit collection and land ownership in Chattogram, Bangladesh. Upon investigation, it was discovered that the logo of the national daily Prothom Alo appears in the footage. A search of the newspaper’s YouTube channel uncovered a video titled ‘Allegations of Violence Against Women Over Jackfruit Collection,’ published on June 3, 2022. The video (view here) matches the footage being circulated with the recent claim. According to Prothom Alo’s report, the incident stemmed from a dispute over jackfruit collection. Further investigation led to a June 3, 2022 report published by mainstream media outlet Dhaka Tribune, titled ‘Three Women Beaten Over Jackfruit Collection in Chattogram, Video Goes Viral’ (view here). According to this report, the incident occurred on June 2, 2022, in the Jorbottila area of Bashbaria Union, Sitakunda, Chattogram District. The assault involved three women: - Shrimati Rani Das (30), wife of Jogendra Chandra Das - Anjana Rani Das (32), wife of Milan Chandra Das - Rima Rani Das (27), wife of Krishna Chandra Das The attackers were identified as Touhidul Islam and Alamgir. Following the incident, the victims filed a formal complaint. Subsequent posts on social media from 2022 also align with the details of this incident. For instance, a Facebook post by Jonny Chowdhury on June 5, 2022 (view here) cited a family member of the victims, Tapan Das. He claimed: “The attackers have been illegally occupying around 50 decimals of land, although they initially purchased only five decimals. They have falsified documents to take over more land, including property belonging to Hindus. Despite court cases and evidence supporting us, they continue their aggression. They threaten to evict us from the country and frequently resort to violence.” Another Facebook post by Sumon Das on June 4, 2022, reiterated that the incident was not solely about jackfruit collection but was part of a long-standing plan by the perpetrators to evict the victims through intimidation and violence. He noted that the attackers had previously used brute force to harass and evict other families in the area. Reports from the local news outlet Khobor Bangla (view here) also confirmed that the victims had filed complaints with the Sitakunda Model Police Station. They pursued legal action at the Chattogram court (Case No. 1327/2021). According to police complaints, the attackers, led by Haji Aminul Haque and his sons Alamgir and Touhidul Islam, had repeatedly attempted to forcibly occupy the victims’ land The latest attack occurred on June 2, 2022, when the dispute over jackfruit collection led to the assault. Conclusion The evidence confirms that the video depicts an assault linked to a long-standing dispute over land and jackfruit collection in Chattogram in 2022. Claims that it shows a recent attack by Muslim men attempting to kill a Hindu woman are misleading.
