  • Fact Check: Did Andrew Tye quit IPL citing lack of healthcare in India? Old quote viral out of context India Today found that this dates back to April 2021 when the second wave of Covid-19 was at its peak. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check These comments by Andrew Tye are two years old. Tye isn’t part of the ongoing IPL season. Has Australian cricketer Andrew Tye quit the Indian Premier League? Some social media posts seem to suggest so. One such post — a Reel featuring a photo of Tye wearing the Rajasthan Royals jersey and Hindi text — claims that the fast bowler left the IPL midway and returned home, saying, "I don't understand how Indian companies and government can spend so much money on the IPL when people there need hospitals." The archived version of this post can be seen here. India Today Fact Check found that this incident is a couple of years old and Tye is not part of the ongoing IPL season at all. OUR PROBE We searched for news reports regarding this but found nothing recent. However, we found reports from April 2021 that quoted the cricketer making a similar remark. A report in The Economic Times from April 26, 2021, mentioned that Tye, who was playing for the Rajasthan Royals at the time, opted out from the tournament amid rising Covid-19 deaths in India. It is also worth mentioning that a big chunk of IPL 2021 matches were held in the United Arab Emirates in the wake of the Covid-19 surge in India. Per this report, Tye was quoted saying, "Looking at it from an Indian point of view, how are these companies and franchises spending so much money, and the government, on the IPL when there's people not being able to get accepted into hospital?" "If sport can continue and be one of those avenues to relieve stress or give a glimmer of hope that the world is OK and there is light at the end of the tunnel, I think it should go ahead," he added. Per an NDTV report from the time, Tye decided to leave as he feared getting "locked out" of his own country amid rising Covid-19 cases. IS TYE PART OF THIS IPL SEASON? A subsequent search with keywords took us to an India Today report from December 23, 2022, that featured a list of unsold players at the mini-auction for IPL 2023. With a base price of Rs. 1 crore, Andrew Tye was mentioned in the list of unsold overseas players. He last played for the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL in 2022. Thus, it is evident that the comments by the Australian cricketer are two years old and not related to the ongoing IPL season.
