  • Fact Check: No helicopter crash in Mathura, old photo from Arunachal Pradesh incident viral India Today found that the claim about Air Marshal Pankaj Mohan Sinha's death in a Mathura helicopter crash is false. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This photo is from a 2021 incident in Arunachal Pradesh. No helicopter crash has been reported from Mathura. A photo of what appears to be a crashed helicopter has been shared by many online. Those sharing it claimed it was an Indian Air Force chopper. Per such posts, Air Marshal Pankaj Mohan Sinha, who allegedly was in the helicopter, died in the crash that happened in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. A Facebook user wrote, “BREAKING: An Mi-17V5 of the Indian Air Force carrying the Commander of Western Air Command of IAF, Air Marshal Pankaj Mohan Sinha has crashed near Mathura. His condition remains unknown, and internet services in the area have been suspended,” wrote an X user who shared the image.” The archive of one such post can be seen here. India Today found that the picture is from a 2021 crash in Arunachal Pradesh, and no recent crash has been reported in Mathura. OUR PROBE Upon reverse searching the keyframes of the viral video, we found it in several media reports from November 2021. A Mi-17 helicopter of the Indian Air Force crash-landed at Rochham helipad in Arunachal Pradesh due to a technical snag, resulting in minor injuries to the pilots and crew members. Several media reports confirmed that the helicopter, on a sortie from Hayuliang to Rochham in Anjaw district, experienced rotor damage during the crash landing. All officers and crew members were reported safe. A search on the internet for recent helicopter crashes in Mathura yielded no results. Additionally, we scrutinised social media accounts associated with the Air Force and the Ministry of Defence but couldn’t find any news about a helicopter crash or internet outage in Mathura. We also found no news reports about the death of Air Marshal Pankaj Mohan Sinha, who assumed the position of Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Air Force’s Western Air Command on January 1, 2023. Thus, it’s clear that the viral claim is patently false. Please share it on our at 73 7000 7000 You can also send us an email at factcheck@intoday.com
