  • Fact Check: Video from political clash in Karachi FALSELY shared as militant attack on Pak forces India Today Fact Check found that this video does not show Baloch separatists' assault on Pakistani forces, but a violent clash between the two political parties in Karachi. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video from a political clash in Karachi has been falsely shared as the Baloch Liberation Army’s attack on the Pakistani forces. On January 29 and 30, the militant group Balochistan Liberation Army targeted Pakistani military and security installations with guns and rockets in the city of Mach, near Balochistan’s capital, Quetta. Reportedly, four security forces and two civilians were killed in the attack and 15 members of the Pakistani security forces were wounded. Interim Balochistan Information Minister Jan Achakzai claimed that seven militants were also killed. Now, a video making rounds on social media shows multiple motor vehicles on fire. An X user wrote, “Local sources claim that multiple Pakistani forces have been killed and wounded in the ongoing major attack in Mach, Bolan. Balochistan.” Its archive can be seen here. India Today Fact Check found that this video does not show Baloch separatists' recent assault on Pakistani forces, but a violent clash between the two political parties in Karachi. OUR PROBE Reverse-searching keyframes from the viral video led us to an X post dated January 29, 2024. This video, along with two others, was shared by a Pakistani journalist named Samar Abbas. According to the post, this was a “clash between MQM and PPP workers near Karachi, Nazimabad Inquiry Office” and “one person Faraz, son of Ghafoor, was killed, two injured, and two vehicles were set on fire by angry people”. Subsequent searches with relevant keywords led us to multiple news reports that contain screengrabs from the viral video. As per The Express Tribune, a worker of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) died while a Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) worker sustained injuries during a violent clash between members of the two parties on the night of January 28 in Karachi’s Nazimabad area. According to locals, the clash occurred when a PPP rally was passing by the area and some attempted to hoist the party flag in front of the MQM-P office. This escalated to physical violence, during which, unidentified individuals set fire to two vehicles. As per the police, the deceased was 44-year-old Faraz Ahmed Qureshi. Thus, it’s clear that a video from a political clash in Karachi was falsely shared as the Baloch Liberation Army’s attack on the Pakistani forces near Quetta.
