India Today Fact Check
Viral video is not from the Ambani wedding, but from the reception ceremony of South Indian actors Deepak Parambol and Aparna Das held on April 24.
Following the grand event that was Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s wedding, a video of people in traditional outfits eating sadya from banana leaves and paper cups began making the rounds on social media. Those sharing the clip claimed it showed a meal served at the grand wedding. Some even mocked the Ambani family for not serving food in proper cutlery at such a lavish event.
India Today Fact Check found that the viral clip is not from the Ambani wedding, but from a South Indian wedding reception that took place in April.
OUR PROBE
A reverse search of keyframes from the viral clip led us to similar videos of the couple seen in the viral clip, eating from banana leaves at a ceremony.
One such video was shared on April 24, around three months before the Ambani-Merchant wedding. Its description in Malayalam, translated into English, read: “Aparna Das had a meal with her husband!”
Further searches led us to media reports about the wedding of Aparna Das, an Indian actress who has done several Malayalam and Tamil films. Aparna tied the knot with actor Deepak Parambol on April 24. The wedding took place at Kerala’s Guruvayur temple abd was attended by close friends and family. Later in the day, they threw a grand reception which was attended by film stars and other guests at a hotel in Kerala.
The wedding photographer shared photos of Deepak and Aparna from the wedding ceremony and reception, which the couple reshared from their official Instagram handles. From the outfits seen in these pictures, it is clear that the viral video is from their reception.
Thus, an old video from the reception of South Indian actors was falsely claimed to be from the grand Ambani-Merchant wedding.
