  • A meme with the claim intended to be satirical. However, Harrison Butker was previously selected as special teams captain for the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2024 playoffs. In late August 2024, the Facebook page America - Love It Or Leave It posted a meme claiming Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker has become a team captain. Text in the image read: "Harrison Butker Becomes the First NFL Kicker in History to be Named a Team Captain: 'He Has Everyone's Respect.'" (Facebook page America Love It Or Leave It) The rumor has circulated before. Months earlier, in May 2024, a similar post was published by the Facebook page America's Last Line of Defense (ALLOD). However, the posts were not a factual recounting of real-life events. The America - Love It Or Leave It Facebook page is part of ALLOD — a network of websites and social media pages that describes its output as satirical in nature. The America - Love It Or Leave It Facebook page links to a website, latherland.com, that includes the following disclaimer: Everything on this website is fiction. It is not a lie and it is not fake news because it is not real. If you believe that it is real, you should have your head examined. Any similarities between this site's pure fantasy and actual people, places, and events are purely coincidental and all images should be considered altered and satirical. [...] Both Facebook pages, ALLOD and America - Love It Or Leave It, say in their bios: "Nothing on this page is real." They're both labeled "Satire/parody" and say they are run by an individual branded "Busta Troll." Additionally, both memes about Butker included a "Rated 'S' Satire" label in their bottom-right corners. Butker was actually the Chiefs' special teams captain during the playoffs in January 2024. Snopes previously addressed numerous claims related to the NFL kicker following remarks he made in a commencement speech at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas, on May 11, 2024. Butker was in the spotlight after saying most female graduates would be more excited at the prospect of getting married and serving their husbands than developing their own careers. He told them they had been lied to about their futures and they should ignore "outside noise" by moving "closer and closer to God's will" by becoming homemakers. For background, here is why we alert readers to rumors created by sources that call their output humorous or satirical.
