  • Fact Check: Terrifying 2018 video of superfast lava flow shared as Hawaii's recent Mauna Loa eruption A video showing the 2018 volcanic eruption in Kilauea was shared with the claims that it showed the recent volcanic eruption of the world's largest active volcano Mauna Loa in Hawaii. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video shows Kilauea’s Fissure 8, a 2018 volcanic eruption that happened miles away from Mauna Loa. The world’s largest active volcano, Hawaii’s Mauna Loa, erupted for the first time in nearly 40 years on November 27, ending its longest quiet period in recorded history. Reportedly ejecting 30 to 60 metres of lava into the air, Mauna Loa has joined its neighbour Kilauea — an active volcano 21 miles away that has been erupting for more than a year now. This unusual dual-eruption event has grabbed the attention of many because the last time these volcanoes erupted simultaneously was back in 1984. Amid the deluge of videos and photos of this “sacred event”, one video making the rounds on social media shows fast-pacing streams of incandescent lava. In the video, two men can be seen witnessing an orange-red stream of lava flowing at an alarming speed. People sharing this video on social media platforms claimed that it showed the recent Mauna Loa eruption in Hawaii. One Twitter user sharing this video wrote: “Watch: Fountains of lava up to 200 feet (60 meters) high have been fired into the air from Hawaii's Mauna Loa, geologists say, generating rivers of molten rock from the world's largest active volcano.” A Mexico-based journalist also shared this video, writing in Spanish: “Lava fountains up to 60 meters high shoot out of the Mauna Loa volcano in Hawaii.” Another such tweet read in Spanish: “This is how they captured the volcano Mauna Loa in Hawaii in the last hours.” The archives of such posts can be found here, here, and here. AFWA found that this video is not recent. It also does not show Mauna Loa’s eruption, but rather that of its neighbour — Kilauea. AFWA Probe A reverse search of keyframes from the viral video led us to a 2018 Facebook post by the Daily Mail that contained an extended version of the viral clip. Text in the video stated that it was the Kilauea volcano in Hawaii, and this lava flow supposedly destroyed over 467 homes in its path. This confirmed that the video is not from the recent volcanic eruption. With a keyword search, we landed on a tweet featuring the viral clip that stated that it shows Kilauea’s fissure eight, that took place on June 16, 2018. In addition to this, we found multiple tweets featuring the same video crediting someone called Ken Boyer for capturing it. We then found the Facebook page of Ken Boyer, a photographer based in Hawaii, who shared the same video in 2018. He mentioned the date of the video as June 15, 2018. He also shared the same clip on his YouTube channel, stating that it is from Leilani Estates, a census-designated place in Hawaii County, Hawaii, located in the District of Puna. News reports from 2018 about the Kilauea eruption shared photographs of the fiery stream of lava from the same location as the viral video. Starting around May 3, 2018, a series of volcanic eruptions and strong earthquakes struck Hawaii, causing major damage to the easternmost portion of the Big Island. A continuous flow of lava from Fissure Eight reportedly poured into the ocean at Kapoho Bay, that reached heights up to 180 feet, destroying more than 700 homes and causing a massive evacuation.
