  • A college student in Finland who murdered a classmate in a frenzied sword attack was sentenced to life imprisonment on Friday for a "methodically" planned assault which left a further nine people injured. North Savo District Court found that Joel Marin, 25 at the time, acted "in an extremely composed, determined and decisive manner" when he burst into his classroom at Savo Vocational College in the central Finnish town of Kuopio on 1 October last year, armed with a sword and bottles of petrol. A 23-year-old Ukrainian student died of stab wounds, and the class teacher and a police officer were among the injured. The court also found Marin guilty of 20 counts of attempted murder and ordered him to pay 250,000 euros in compensation to the victims, as well as 240,000 euros to local education authorities after causing fire damage to the college building. Judges rejected the defence's call for a reduced sentence on the grounds of diminished responsibility due to an unbalanced mental state, finding that Marin had "the intellectual capacity to understand what he was planning and what he was ready to do". Marin, sporting long hair and dressed in black, listened expressionless through much of the eight-day court case as dozens of victims and witnesses gave testimony, according to local media reports. The court was shown transcripts of police questioning after his arrest, in which Marin told officers he wanted revenge on the world for his unhappy, lonely life and experiences of being bullied. "I thought that killing innocent people was wrong, but I didn't care," Marin told his interviewers. He said he identified with previous killers, including the perpetrators of two massacres in Finnish schools in 2007 and 2008, which led to changes in gun laws in the Nordic country. sgk/pvh
