  • Fact Check: Biker harassing students in UP? This video shows incidents in Maharashtra, MP India Today Fact Check found that the two clips show two different incidents, and neither is from Uttar Pradesh. The first video is from Maharashtra and the second video is from Madhya Pradesh. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check These videos show two separate incidents and neither is from Uttar Pradesh. The clip of the man on the bike is from Maharashtra. The clip showing a man being caught by the police is from Madhya Pradesh. A video making the rounds online right now purports to show a Muslim man on a bike sexually harassing students in Uttar Pradesh. The video then cuts to several police officers apprehending and beating up a man, allegedly the same person who was on the bike. The video was shared with captions like: "Abdul was molesting school girls every day. His activity captured in CCTV camera. Rest job done by UP police. Do you support this action of police?" Abdul is a euphemism often employed online to refer to Muslims. India Today Fact Check found that the two clips show two different incidents, and neither is from Uttar Pradesh. The first video is from Maharashtra and the second video is from Madhya Pradesh. THE FIRST CLIP Reverse-searching keyframes from the first half of the clip showing the man on the bike led us to a December 9 ABP Majha video report. According to the Marathi report, this video was from Maharashtra’s Parbhani. The Marathi news outlet Sakal also reported the same in a video report. We also found a Marathi news report from December 9. It said that on December 6 in Parbhani, a man called Aslam sexually harassed college students while on a bike. The act was caught on CCTV and quickly went viral online. A complaint was reportedly registered at the Nanalpeth Police Station in Parbhani and the accused was subsequently apprehended. India Today Fact Check spoke to inspector Chitambar Kamthewad of the Nanalpeth Police Station. He said that the video was indeed from Parbhani. Per the officer, on December 6, the man was caught sexually harassing college students while riding a bike under the influence of alcohol. THE SECOND CLIP We found this video shared on an Instagram account on December 9. As per the post’s caption, on December 9 in Gadarwara in Madhya Pradesh’s Narsinghpur district, a man was arrested in connection with a murder case. Using this information, we found news reports about the incident that featured the viral clip. As per reports, a man named Vikas Kuchbandiya was arrested for the murder of Madhur Chaurasia over a dispute of Rs 40,000. Some reports also mentioned that the accused had a previous criminal history and allegedly slit the victim’s throat. This was corroborated by AajTak’s Gadarwara correspondent. Thus, it’s clear that while the man on the bike in the first video is indeed Muslim, neither video has anything to do with each other or with Uttar Pradesh.
