| - A rumor users circulated online in March 2025 claimed that a photo showed hundreds of black bears lining U.S. Highway 65 near the tourist destination city of Branson, Missouri. The picture portrayed bears exhibiting brown fur, a color black bears sometimes possess.
For example, a Snopes reader asked about the rumor via email, sending the first of two sentences matching those of numerous Facebook posts from late February and early March, reading, "A group of wild black bears has taken over Highway 65 near Branson, Missouri. This is abnormal and attributed to the change in temperatures due to climate change."
However, the photo originated on a Facebook profile named Bear's World and featuring fake pictures of bears generated with artificial intelligence (AI). The page's transparency tab said the profile's four managers resided in Bangaldesh.
A spokesperson for the Missouri State Highway Patrol said by email that they "just became aware of this rumor." They added, "Our Public Information Officers assigned to the Branson area have not received any inquires in reference to the rumor from the media or the public. There have been no recent bear related incidents on Missouri roadways." The Branson Police Department and Bear's World profile's managers did not yet respond to requests for comment, including asking Bear's World about the AI tool utilized to generate the photo and for confirmation they created the images.
Bear's World pictures generated with AI
The original Bear's World Facebook post from Feb. 25 showed the caption, "Beautiful photography with AI."
The profile featured other AI-generated photos of black bears lining a similar tree-lined road.
Another fake picture depicted dozens of bears enjoying a day in a field.
The Bear's World profile also posted an AI-generated image showing hundreds of bears on a beach.
For further reading, users previously shared AI-generated photos purportedly depicting a large Maine Coon, pink dolphin, massive octopus, giant centipede and snowy owls.
