  • Fact Check: How did Kamal Nath react to Atiq Ahmed's death? Clipped video shared out of context Did Kamal call Atiq Ahmad's death 'unfortunate,' or was he saying something else? India Today found out that the video was clipped out of context. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This is a clipped video and does not show the complete statement of Kamal Nath. He was referring to the law-and-order situation in Uttar Pradesh. The public killing of gangster-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf, which was captured on camera, has polarised the nation, with some cheering the incident and others criticising the failure of law enforcement in Uttar Pradesh. Following the April 15 killings, a video of former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath has started making rounds on social media. It shows Nath supposedly responding to a question about Ahmed’s death. Nath can be heard saying, "Dekhiye, bade dukh ki baat hai... (See, it is an unfortunate thing)." This video featured a text over it that quoted Kamal Nath stating, "It's quite unfortunate that Atiq Ahmad is dead." People sharing the clip accused the Congress leader of supporting terrorists and goons. The archived version of such a post can be seen here. India Today's fact-check team has found that the video does not show the complete response of Kamal Nath and is being shared out of context. Our Probe Upon searching keywords to get relevant results on the said topic, results led us to a report in Business Standard published on April 16, 2023. This report noted that Nath sought a Supreme-Court-monitored probe into the murder of Atiq Ahmed. Per a Business Today report from April 16, 2023, the Bharatiya Janata Party subsequently criticised him for this and accused him of taking sides with the mafia. Then, we searched with some advanced keywords to find the original video of Kamal Nath's address to the press and found it on the official Facebook page of INC Madhya Pradesh. The part where Kamal Nath spoke about Atiq Ahmed's death can be seen around the two-minute mark. In the original video, Nath can be heard saying, "Dekhiye bade dukh ki baat hain, aaj khule roop se jo yeh murder ho rahe hain, yeh kya ishara karte hain? Hamari kanun vyavastha kya hai? Kya rajniti ho rahi hai ab Uttar Pradesh mein aur apne desh mein? Saaf murder ho raha hain, ek din kisi ka hota hai, dusre din uske bhai ka hota hai. Yeh kya sanket hain iske? Yeh aap sabko sochne ki baat hai keval mujhe sochne ki baat nahi hai. Poore samaj ko sochne ki baat hai ki kaha apna Uttar Pradesh aur kaha apna desh ghasita ja raha hain (It is unfortunate that today murders are happening in broad daylight. What does it indicate? Where is the law and order? What kind of politics is taking place in Uttar Pradesh and the country? One day someone is killed and the next day someone else. It is for society to think about where UP and the country are heading)." After watching the complete statement of Kamal Nath, it is clear that an incomplete part of his statement was without the proper context. The former MP CM was speaking about the whole scenario and did not express sadness over the death of Atiq Ahmed.
