  • Fact Check: Neither Nangal Dam, nor recent - this 2018 video is from Chamba in Himachal Pradesh India Today found that this video does not show the Nangal Dam at all. This is a 2018 video of the Baloo Bridge in Chamba, Himachal Pradesh. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is from September 2018 and shows the Baloo Bridge amid heavy rains in Chamba, Himachal Pradesh. Due to relentless rains, on July 8, more than 23,000 cusec water was released from the Bhakra Dam into the Gobind Sagar Lake. At the Nangal Dam, around 24,000 cusec water was released into three different locations. Amid these developments, a video of tempestuous muddy water in a river flowing under a bridge was widely shared on social media platforms. “Oh my God — Nangal dam high alert,” read the text in the video. An archived version of this post can be found here. India Today found that this video does not show the Nangal Dam at all. This is a 2018 video of the Baloo Bridge in Chamba, Himachal Pradesh. OUR PROBE A reverse search of keyframes from the viral clip led us to a Facebook post from September 2018. Containing the video in question, the post noted that the water level of the Ravi River went up due to heavy rainfall in Chamba, a district in Himachal Pradesh. Further searches led us to the same video shared on the Facebook page of DD News Himachal on September 23, 2018. It mentioned that the bridge in the clip was the Baloo Bridge. According to media reports from September 2018, incessant rains triggered flash floods in Himachal Pradesh, and other parts of northern India. Per reports, the Baloo Bridge was closed for traffic movement owing to the rise in water levels. We also found another video of the Baloo bridge surrounded by raging waves of Ravi from around the same time. It’s noteworthy that the bridge is more than 200 km away from the Nangal dam. We also looked up the Baloo Bridge on Google Maps and photos of the bridge provided there matched the one in the viral clip. A comparison between the two can be seen below. Thus, it is more than clear that this video is neither recent nor from around the Nangal Dam.
