India Today Fact Check
This video shows an incident that happened in Madhya Pradesh’s Damoh.
Six people were killed and over 100 injured in the violence that broke out in Uttrakhand’s Haldwani on February 8 over an anti-encroachment drive. As the situation escalated, the authorities imposed a curfew and deployed paramilitary forces to bring the situation under control.
Meanwhile, a video allegedly showing a policeman being heckled by a mob has gone viral on social media. In the video, the cop can be seen confronting people standing around him.
An X user shared the video and wrote, “Shoot at site order against peaceful pigs in Haldwani, Uttarakhand. Haldwani Uttarakhand SHO Anand Singh Thakur says ‘I came alone. I am standing alone. Touch me.’”
India Today found that this video in question shows an incident which happened in Madhya Pradesh’s Damoh district.
Our Probe
We noticed that there was text in the viral video that read: “Muslim Mob surrounded police station in Damoh Madhya Pradesh. They threatened to behead four youths in front of the Police. SHO Anand Singh Thakur confronted the mob alone and announced, ‘I have come alone. I’m standing alone. Put a hand on me.’”
Getting a clue from this, we ran a keyword search and found that the viral video was shared on the official YouTube channel of MP Tak on February 5, 2024. In this version, the cop can be heard saying, “I am standing alone. If you have guts, try to put your hand on me.”
As per the MP Tak report, the policeman in the viral video was Anand Singh Thakur, the town inspector of Damoh's Kotwali police station. Navbharat Times published a detailed report about the incident.
According to it, there was a scuffle between a tailor and some people. Following this, hundreds gathered at Damoh's Kotwali police station, created a ruckus, and threatened to chop off the hands of people from the other side. After this, Thakur confronted them and warned them not to use provocative language.
Thus, it’s clear that the viral video has nothing to do with the violence in Haldwani.
